Elephant Christmas Tree Recycling
At the Berlin Zoo in Germany, this is how they recycle their Christmas trees. They feed their elephants discarded Christmas trees thrown away by residents as well as unsold trees from vendors. I don't think I've ever seen an animal eat a whole tree, have you? It's a great idea. American zoos should try this too. Found here.

Our Vines Have Tender Grapes: Movie Review
An endearing and quietly rhapsodic slice of Americana about a single year among the Norwegian immigrants in a Wisconsin farm town, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes enthralled 1945 audiences and critics with its timeless joys. Told from the viewpoint of little Selma (Margaret O’Brien), the film explores grand childhood adventures: making friends, a pet calf, Christmas, a terrifying trip down a flood-swollen river, a barn fire and a ride on a circus elephant’s trunk. In a change-of-pace role, Edward G. Robinson is a revelation of wisdom and compassion as Selma’s father, leading a fine cast that illuminates the profound power of everyday triumphs and sorrows.
I have watched this movie twice on TCM and love it. It follows the life of a close Norwegian family in a Wisconsin settlement. The family values of the whole village are wonderful and Margaret O'Brien is a treasure. I love her telling of the Nativity in the church Christmas pageant.
Maybe you can find the DVD at your library. You can stream it on Amazon and iTunes. This is a must-see movie. I have never read the book but it must be wonderful too.

Wrinkles Can Be Beautiful
Especially on an elephant. They can live to be as old as 86 and this looks like an old old. She wears her wrinkles well.
I have a meeting this morning and hopefully some good houses will be on the open house tour. I rather doubt it though because so many people are away. See you later.

Elephant Landmine Victim with New Prosthetic Leg
Raising her trunk, three-legged Mosha salutes her new prosthetic limb, which means she can get back on the jungle trail. She lost her leg at age 7 months in a landmine accident. Now she is 3 years old and has grown so much that she is now on her second 'jumbo-sized' artificial limb. See many more photos and a video too about this heartwarming story . . . here.
I wish someone would arrange a photo shoot with the giant tortoise I blogged about recently with a most unusual artificial front leg. Doctors who treat injured animals are heroes in my book.

Murray-arity versus Benedict Sherlock
I'm ignoring the elephant in the room (the coming snow storm) in favor of Benedict, Murray, and The Count.
This is so adorable. What a cute way to introduce PBS Kids to Sherlock Holmes. Click here if you can't see the video above. Benedict Cumberbatch, as himself, is quite comfortable with two of the Muppets, isn't he? Now I love him even more.

Elephant Face Off
Awesome photo. These elders don't look at all angry, but friendly. Elephants are such magnificent animals and because of their ivory tusks their numbers are diminishing in Africa at an alarming rate. All because of the huge demand for ivory in China. via
