My New Year's Day Traditional Supper

I thoroughly enjoyed my traditional southern home cooking for New Year's Day. I like my black-eyed peas rather "soupy" so I can dunk my cornbread in the "pot liquor" as we always called it in my family. The collard greens were good too. I will have my peas in a soup bowl tomorrow and crumble cornbread in it. Yum. I love leftovers and I have plenty. I've done a lot of research on greens and collard greens are off the charts when it comes to nutrition compared to kale, spinach, and all the other greens. They are good for your eyes too. Don't forget to eat your greens! xo

And to top off that healthy meal, you're eating it on beautiful blue and white china. Maybe Bird of Paradise? My husband and I have started eating more greens lately. In fact, with fewer trips to the grocery store due to the pandemic, I have even purchased the canned, seasoned collard greens so we never run out. I'm sure the fresh are more nutritious, but the canned Glory brand is great to have on the pantry shelf!

We’re having black eyed peas too❣️ Years ago we adopted 2 sisters from Russia, Anna was 12 and Alisa was 9. They no English and we spoke no Russian. New Year’s Day we made black eyed peas which they had never seen. New food had been a real challenge for them. They wouldn’t try them. We explained the good luck to them. They each tried 1 pea each❣️Didn’t like them at all. But they then proceeded to eat one more than the other! We remembered maybe 7 was the winner❣️ Hope you have a wonderful Beautiful Blessed New Year

Down South, its "likker", none of that high-faultin' "liquor"! Lived down there about 25 years too long!

Happy New Year and I just love your blog!

Pam -- My Shoprite grocer has one pound bags of frozen chopped collard greens and I always stock up every time I see them. The fresh ones are way too much trouble. I have had the Glory brand canned ones too and they are delicious but frozen ones are my favorite. I add them to smoothies too with frozen blueberries. My blue and white transferware divided dish is some sort of variation of the Willow pattern. It weighs a ton and was probably used for Blue Plate Specials long ago in diners. It's marked Cook China Co. on the back.

I can't believe that I've never looked for frozen greens--and yes, the fresh ones are a pain to prepare!! I'm checking into them the next time I go shopping. Thanks for the tip, Rosemary!!

OK, will give collards awhirl. LOL Having lived a few different places in this country and now in southwestern PA have always enjoyed trying the regional fare. One thing we traditionally have is pork and sauerkraut coming from husbands PA roots. Everything looks better on a blue and white plate! HA
