Lovely Raised Bed Flower Garden

I have always loved plantings so close together that weeds don't have a chance. I no longer look at photos like this and want them for myself. I know my limitations and am quite happy with what I've got. I like perennials, geraniums, nasturtiums, limelight hydrangeas and milkweed, lambs ears, and peonies. I overwinter my hardier plants. Right now my lilies of the valley are blooming and I have large buds on my peonies. My Lady's Mantle has been enjoying capturing all the raindrops we've had lately too. I don't do store-bought mulch like most people because I prefer wood chips in my beds. How does your garden grow? Enjoy all of my individual links leading to various photos around my cottage gardening. xo

This statement from you post sums up so much for me these days, "I know my limitations and am quite happy with what I've got." We live in a world that is constantly encouraging us to be discontented with what we don't have. I too know my limitations which are becoming even more limiting. I'm trying to view each day as a gift and to be grateful for all that I have because I'm so abundantly blessed.....some days I forget though.

I wish I was better at gardening, our move west has made it even more of a challenge but I'm trying. I'm still figuring out what works and doesn't work around our new landscaped cottage, I will be pulling out some plants and replacing them this spring.

There are gardens, that I can visit in the area, that have magnificent plantings that are planted close together and in the spring they are breathtaking to view.

I love your peonies, Rosemary. They are, perhaps, my favorite flower. Your hydrangeas are gorgeous too, and I'm wondering what the soil and sun conditions are in that part of your garden that cause them to flourish. Right now I have a very large Philadelphus, (Mock Orange), bush blooming and it's lovely to look at, smells wonderful, and attracts butterflies, which is a bonus.

I love daylillies, irises, hydrangeas and black-eyed Susans. Because we have lots of shade, hostas are also favorites. Impatiens and geraniums are my favorite annuals. Love petunias and sweet potato vines in planters that hang on our garage wall. Not sure how much longer I will be planting flowers. It takes me twice as long to set out half as much . Old age sure sneaks up on us. Not sure when it happened. Guess I just wasn't paying attention. Very much appreciate your blog!

LIsa -- My Limelight hydrangeas are in the ground and in a raised bed on the back side of my house. I have no idea of the soil. It is whatever you get when wood chips break down. I have never fertilized them. They get the morning sun until the sun gets over the roof ridge to the front of my house and then my house starts casting a shadow their way about 2:00 in the afternoon. Then they have open shade. They seem to like where they are. The one planted in the ground has been there since the day I brought it home from the nursery about 5 years ago. I broke it apart since there were two separate plants growing in one pot. I have moved that plant three times because the two previous locations were in a deer path and the deer were eating them. Last year was the first year in the raised bed and it turned out to be perfect.
Hope this helps.
