I have seen photos of this cake with each square being a different color or two colors arranged in a checkerboard pattern. Plain white cake is fine with me.
I just read a book where Battenberg Cake was mentioned and I didn't really know what it looked like, now I do. I love marzipan although I really shouldn't eat it now. This cake looks like it was prepared with Christmas in mind.

My (the commenter's) son bakes a good Batternburg cake, using two colours for the sponge. There are some good Batternburg cake recepies on the BBC food website.
