Blooming Amaryllis at My Cottage

In the few days since I took these photos, a third flower has bloomed on my stunning Amaryllis. I hope I will have success in forcing it to bloom again next year. I have done it in the past but I will have to refresh my memory on how to do it. I seem to remember planting it outside and then bringing it in and putting it in the refrigerator. These flowers are way too pretty for just one season. This pot was a Christmas present from a friend.

WOW! What a gorgeous color with beautiful blooms. All I ever see to buy are the red ones.

Such a pretty color. Mine was red, bloomed and was gone before Christmas.

Catherine -- this one came from a garden center. They usually have the best selection.

Catherine -- Whenever they bloom they are beautiful. I think it's a challenge to get the timing right if you want Christmas blooms. Mine had one big bud the week before Christmas when my friend bought it and brought it to me. In no time at all I had big blooms. I was surprised and so was my friend. I think it depends on the amount of light in your room and how warm you keep your house.

Lovely flowers. Thanks for sharing with us. I remember my brother saying they need to dry out. I did a little google search and he's right, they do need a dormancy period. I think it's worth doing some reading on this. I didn't read much, as I'm not lucky enough to have one, but I'll bet someone on some site will explain how to time the bloom for next year. Then we all get to see it again next year. I love the idea of plants as a gift. Better than more stuff, or cookies and candy.

Beautiful pink Amaryllis, Rosemary! The pinks are so much softer than the reds and are prettier, to me, at Christmas time. Thank you for your inspiring blog with all your beautiful photography, which I have enjoyed for many years. Have a wonderful, happy, healthy and rewarding New Year! xo, Barbara

wish now that I had been better organized so as to have one of these lovelies to lend cheer now that most all of the Christmas decorations are packed away. I removed the ornaments from our tree yesterday and will pack them away on this rainy day . . . greens remain for a few more days in the planters outdoors on the porch.

Hi Rosemary,
I've been coming to your blog for a long time and have never stopped to comment. The amaryllis is beautiful, but I really love the horse painting behind it. You always show lovely and funny things. I enjoy coming here as a near daily habit. Happy New Year to you and thanks for all your work on keeping up with the blog!

Just the right amount of festive cheer and color especially as you didn't bring out your delightful small tree this year. How lovely and perfect for it to bloom during the holidays, as you stated.... always tricky timing with Amaryllis and Paper Whites and the holidays. Today we got another small snowstorm the beauty of which was spoiled as it turned to rain and is now a slushy mess but we'll take it and be grateful as it is so badly needed.

Did you have a third flower, or a third flower stalk? I ask because I've only ever had two flower stalks, or one.

To get mine to rebloom, I bring it, potted, outside in spring; stop watering in August and let the leaves dry or yellow; shake off all soil; store bulb in a cool dark space (I usually put mine in brown bags in the cellar); remember to remove them 4 months later (3 months not long enough, I find); plant bulbs in a pot and put in a semi-light space, then move into full light and water regularly.

Cynthis Reyes == Cynthia: Yes, I did get a third flower and it was just as big and beautiful as the other two. Thank you so much for the instructions for getting the bulb to bloom again next year.
