Laundry Day Upstairs

I have looked and looked at this photo and I cannot figure out how they got the clothes on the line. I don't see a pulley system; just stretched lines. It looks all but impossible to me. I have a couple of loads of wash I hope to be able to hang outside tomorrow. We have a cloudless sky today so I think I'll be okay.

The Chickens and The Underwear

This made me laugh. The shadows are much more graphic than the laundry hanging in the courtyard.

Laundry Day in Winter

I am glad to see someone else thinks it's never to cold to hang out the clothes. By Alec Soth, Sleeping by the Mississippi. Peter’s Houseboat, Winona Minnesota 2002

We are still having unusually mild weather and I have already put in my first load. Monday is the traditional laundry day after all.

Laundry Day at My Cottage

My day so far.

Webster and I hung out two loads of clothes today. It was very mild with temperatures in the mid 60s.

I always hang the wicker laundry basket on a piece of rough bark sticking out of this tree.

These ugly apples from a friend's orchard are the most delicious I have ever tasted. We picked all we could reach with our long apple picker on Saturday.

The sun was shining brightly on these leaves and they almost looked as if they were on fire.

Drying Laundry by the Stove

I am so behind in my laundry. It's on my list of things to do tomorrow. I think I'll be able to hang them outside too. This would be the next best thing if I had an Aga range. Don't you love this homey scene? via

Washing Hats, Scarves, and Mittens

When I put away all the winter gear for the summer everything smelled a little musty. I want to wash the hats, scarves and mittens this week in Woolite and get the cold weather season off to a fresh start. These items were drying on my kitchen radiator last winter. Hope you had a nice weekend.

Another Painted Kitchen Floor to Admire

It rained all night and it's still coming down. I'm so happy I emptied my laundry basket yesterday and was able to hang everything on the clothesline to dry. My bed linens smelled wonderful, like sunshine and newly mown grass. I was careful not to discharge the grass clippings in the direction of the sheets. I'm thrilled that I accomplished these two tasks so I can enjoy doing whatever I please today. Enjoy your Sunday.

I love the gray and white diamonds on this painted floor, don't you?

A Shrine to Laundry

There are no words. This could be my favorite laundry room out of all I've ever posted. I'm picturing the clothes line and the cutting garden just outside this room.

UPDATE:  I found out this was The HGTV Green Home 2010 and I found a website with many more pictures of this wonderful home - HERE.

Laundry Flapping in The Wind

I made a fresh batch of my homemade laundry detergent this morning and my first load is flapping in the breeze getting bleached by the sun. I grated my Octagon soap with my micro-plane grater and it worked much better than the box grater I normally use though it took longer. My second load has been sorted and is ready for my front-loading washer. I honestly can't remember the last time I used my dryer. Enjoy the weekend and I'll see you a little later. xo

Best Laundry-Potting Room on The Planet

What a wonderful place to wash, dry and fold your laundry and do some potting too. You can get your clothes dirty and clean at the same time. I want to see the rest of the room. Honestly, I'm speechless.

Airing the Pillows and Comforter

I love to air my linens on a fine summer day. The down pillows puff up so nicely and smell like sunshine at night. There is no sun in my forecast until Sunday at the earliest. Maybe next Monday I can do this on my balcony railing and hang several loads of wash on the line. Stay dry and I'll see you later. *

Laundry Day

I can hear my washing machine on its final spin cycle at this very minute. I'll be hanging my laundry outside on this sunny, breezy day. I have a number of contraptions for drying clothes inside the house but none will be necessary today. Yay!

Wooden Coat Hanger Clothes Dryer Conversion

Isn't this a great idea? Forget the cards...I'm going to hang socks and unmentionables on mine over the shower curtain rod. All you have to do is screw some "eyes" into a wooden hanger and thread them with twine that is looped through some wooden clothes pins. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for more of these at garage and estate sales. I think they would make great gifts, don't you? Everybody has to drip dry something every once in a while. via

Fabulous Laundry Room/Plant Room

It was unseasonably warm today and more of the same is predicted for tomorrow. I can hear the call of the clothes line and the watering cans. I can't even remember the last time I hung clothes outside to dry on the line since we've had deep snow on the ground since the day after Christmas. It's going away slowly. I love this laundry room/plant room from ElleDecor, don't you?

Goodnight. Sleep Tight.

I can hardly wait to jump in my clean bed with all the line dried linens. I even washed my down comforter today. I have all white on my bed too. Goodnight. Sleep tight. See you in the morning. It was such a beautiful day. Just got back from eating Mexican food with a friend. Yum.

Laundry Day Here At The Cottage

The washer is on the spin cycle right now. I can hardly wait to hang the first load on the line. The ironing board is up for quick pressings before putting the clothes away. It is going to be in the high 60s or low 70s today. So happy. Later, Rosemary

Rain Drops On My Four Leaf Clover

There is a misty rain falling at my house. Thankfully it is not the white stuff. I was lucky yesterday that we had a nice enough day to hang a load of wash outside. I was shocked that everything was almost dry when I took it in. I put the towels on the radiators and hung the rest on my overhead laundry rack in the kitchen. Everything was put away before I went to bed. Sleeping on line-dried sheets is definitely one of the best things I do here at the cottage. I'm still using my first batch of homemade washing powder too and will never be without it. I think I'll make another batch today. It's quick and easy.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday. Rosemary

DIY Laundry Drying Rack

I recently blogged about absolutely loving this laundry room.

Laundry drying rack from Ballard Designs.

DIY laundry drying rack folded flat.

DIY rack shown with bracket to hold it open.

Knobs along the bottom are perfect for drying things on hangers.

Complete DIY instructions from Centsational Girl for making your own at huge savings. Construct several while you are at it in different sizes. I'd like to have one in my bathroom.

I've been saving this on my desktop for ages and am running out of room. Now I can delete it. Let me know if talk someone in your family into making one for you or if you make it yourself. Martha would already be half finished in the time it has taken you to read this. :-)

Antique Wash Boards

Wash or Scrubbing Boards by unknown artists. American, circa 1840-1870. Left to right: carved and doweled pine, carved fruitwood, pine and wire, carved and doweled pine. Private collection.
Scrubbing boards were found in every laundry room in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Soiled clothes were soaped and then rubbed against the ridges of the board, which stood with its legs in a tub of wash water. The fruitwood board second from left is of one-piece construction, all of the other boards are jointed.

I never tire of looking at beautiful antique utilitarian items from everyday life in America, handmade to last. I'm sure these would be wonderful to touch as well. Years of scrubbing clothes by hand would have left the wood very smooth and the hands very rough. We have it so easy, don't we?

Photographed from one of my large coffee table books: America's Traditional Crafts by Robert Shaw.
