J.R.R. Tolkien Quote

Every line is its own quote, isn't it? I like seeing them all together too. Have a great weekend. We  had rain here at the cottage that stopped. Now it's gloomy and muggy but I don't care. I like all kinds of weather. I'm already planning my afternoon nap. xo

Is Watchman the Unedited Mockingbird?

See where

‘Go Set a Watchman’ overlaps with

‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’

word-for-word

Maybe it's not a new book at all. I found this article to be fascinating. Read highlighted passages from both books that are repeated almost word for word. The more I read, the more I believe this is Mockingbird before the two and one half years of editing and rewriting. What do you think? Read here.

Harper Lee Manuscript found in Safe Deposit Box

I don't know about you, but ever since I saw the documentary on PBS about the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, I have had so many questions. Some of them are slowly being answered. I was wondering who was the owner of the safe deposit box? Who was present when it was opened? Who overlooked the unknown manuscript? Is there yet a third unpublished book?

Read this article and the link within from the Wall Street Journal: Harper Lee may have written a third novel, lawyer suggests.
Read the article in the Wall Street Journal ~ (click on top article when link opens).

I'm still curious about another aspect of the unpublished Watchman book from 1957. I understand it is being printed exactly as written. They why did it take 2 whole years of edits before Harper Lee's Mockingbird was published? This doesn't make sense to me. This fact was in the Documentary Film on PBS. Just wondering!

Another New Beatrix Potter Watercolor

Appley Dapply - Beatrix Potter 1890 via
There is nothing in real life more frightening to me than a mouse in the kitchen. But when they are wearing clothes, they are fine. Now, more about this mouse. Beatrix Potter gathered material for a book of rhymes over many years. In 1917, when her publisher was in financial difficulties and needed her help, she suggested that Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes could be brought out quickly, using her existing collection of rhymes and drawings.

I could watch this all day. Don't you love it? Edward Gorey's "The Tunnel Calamity" at Cal Poly's Kennedy Library. via

Jeffersonian Architecture

Looks like a very good read.
In 1999, historians at the Virginia Historical Society acquired three curiously bound volumes of drawings and documents created between 1821 and 1858 by a long and unjustifiably-forgotten architect named Thomas R. Blackburn. Inspection revealed that these were, in fact, no ordinary documents but a unique window onto the life of a distinguished builder and his revered master: Thomas Jefferson.

In these extraordinary books, we find Blackburn, at first a young carpenter, engaged in the construction of Jeffersons famed "academical village" at the University of Virginia. He simultaneously embarked on an ambitious program of architectural study, guided, it appears, by Jefferson himself. The drawings he executed in the four decades that followed extraordinary ink and watercolor explorations of his many residential and civic commissions bear witness to his emergence as a mature and prolific architect in his own right.

In Jeffersons Shadow is a unique document of the relationship between an unknown but highly skilled country builder and the American statesman widely considered this nations first gentleman architect. But it is also an indispensable resource on the little-understood practice of architecture in the early and mid-nineteenth century. text found here This book is currently available on Amazon.

Fire in The Sky and A Book

This photo stopped me in my tracks this morning. Can you imagine waking up to a sunrise like this? It would be like being on top of the world, wouldn't it? via
I had a very interesting weekend. On Saturday morning I woke up to a very cold house with no heat. I immediately called the emergency hotline at the gas company and arranged an appointment for service by or before noon. Later, I was notified he would be much later. Then I called my plumber as a backup. The gas company guy came around 1:30 and it took him a while but he finally located the problem. I was thrilled. The pilot light was out and he needed to replace a defective thermocouple, whatever that is. The bill was very reasonable too. I called and canceled the plumber.
I started a roaring fire in my living room fireplace in the morning and kept it going until I went to bed. It was so nice. The pets liked it too. All is well this morning with a freezing rain. I'm on the last 100 pages of a great book so that's what I'll be doing until I finish it today.

"A fast-moving tale about the world of rare books. A wonderful story with absolutely superb casting." read more here. It's a nice fat book too -- 466 pages. I really don't want it to end. See you later.

Love Old Alarm Clocks

I love the looks of old alarm clocks. I have one in my bedroom that doesn't keep very accurate time but I wind it up every night before I go to sleep. I rely on my iPhone to wake me up every morning.

Here is my clock on top of a great dog book, a thoughtful Christmas gift from a friend. The loud ticking of this clock when I first turn off my light at night helps put me to sleep. It also drowns out the "house noises" that usually keep me awake. I have very acute hearing and I can hear a pin drop in the next county. This old clock is a great noise canceling device and I'm so glad it turned out to be a sleeping aid. Enjoy the evening. xo

My Fortune for Today

I have a can of Chinese Fortune Sticks that sits on table in my bedroom. When I think about it in the morning, I shake the can and open it up. Then I shake it at an angle and then pull out the stick protrudes the farthest and that is my fortune. The one for today was especially true. Here it is photographed on top of a book. "You(r) work is best done alone not in a group." That's me in a nutshell, the lone wolf. Busy day ahead -- see you later. xo

Life's Little Instruction Book | Volume II | Page 82

More fatherly advice. The author sent his son off to college with a handwritten notebook full of these hints long ago. Due to their popularity in the dorm, books were born.

A few more suggestions, observations, and reminders on how to live a happy and rewarding life.

This is a great page. I agree with all three points. The last one might be hard to do for a while. Here's what I'm picturing in my mind. Parent: "Okay?" Child: "No problem!"

1965 German Apple Cake Recipe

I picked up a vintage spiral cookbook from 1965 today and this recipe was marked with a paper clip. I was impressed by the tiny amount of sugar called for and will definitely make this German Apple Cake. When in the world have you seen a recipe that calls for only 1/4 cup of sugar? Of course there is a little more, because you have to sprinkle cinnamon-sugar on top.

I will use coconut oil as the shortening and real butter to dot on top. This recipe will probably take at least 4 apples. I have Pink Lady on hand now and they are nice and sweet. I will probably cut my apples into 16ths -- not sure about that part yet. I will add the apples one at a time in case it takes fewer than my guesstimate. I will grease the pan with butter too. Yum!
I made this. See photos and my revised recipe here.

This makes me want to finish my weeding. I never did finish the front. We are supposed to have rain for the weekend and I've been waiting for a rainy day to loosen them. xo

Life's Little Instruction Book | Volume II | Page 79

I haven't posted a page from this delightful book recently.

Can you believe it's June already? I can't. The last tip on this page is worth a try the next time I'm trying to get a better price on an item.

Life's Little Instruction Book | Volume II | Pages 72 and 73

A few more suggestions, observations, and reminders on how to live a happy and rewarding life.

I like all four of these tips, especially 755, the one about the bookmark. Great advice from a father to a son that went viral and became two books. I like all the helpful hints on this page. The book was published in 1993.

Good one!
Happy First Day of Spring. I can really feel it in the air and I have snowdrops coming up in a sunny spot where all the snow has melted. Yay!
