400 Year Old Cat Door in Exeter Cathedral, Oldest Known

This is one of the best articles from Nice News

It's still very much in use for the occasional rodent. The clock in this room was originally lubricated with lard which attracted mice and rats. It's thought the nursery rhyme Hickory, Dickory, Dock was written about this Astronomical clock that is still in operation. Installed in 1598 by Bishop William Cotton who was appointed by Queen Elizabeth I, "Paid ye carpenters 8 pence for cutting ye hole in ye north transept door for ye Bishop’s cat." Don't you love Olde English?

What an interesting article! Thanks for giving us the link, Rosemary. I thought it was funny that cats (or their owners) were paid for services rendered. Sure glad our old barn cats were satisfied with food, water and lodging, lol.

I visited Exeter Cathedral some years ago and what a wonderful old building it is, full of sanctity and calm.

Pam -- Yes. I thought it was interesting too that the cats were compensated for their work. I hope their owners used the money for the cats in some way like frequent treats of milk and cream in their bowls at home. I'm sure your old barn cats were more than satisfied with your care. xo, Rosemary
