!2 Rules To Live By ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

12 RULES TO LIVE BY
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
  • Make up your mind to be happy. Learn to find pleasure in simple things.
  • Make the best of circumstances. No one has everything and everyone has something of sorrow.
  • Don't take yourself too seriously.
  • Don't let criticism worry you. You can't please everybody.
  • Don't let your neighbors set your standards; be yourself.
  • Do things you enjoy doing but stay out of debt.
  • Don't borrow trouble. Imaginary things are harder to bear than actual ones.
  • Since hate poisons the soul, do not cherish enmities and grudges. Avoid people who make you unhappy.
  • Have many interests. If you can't travel, read about places.
  • Don't hold post-mortems or spend time brooding over sorrows and mistakes.
  • Do what you can for those less fortunate than yourself.
  • Keep busy at something. A very busy person never has time to be unhappy.
  • I posted this long ago (February 16, 2010) and it suddenly became popular again with lots of views so I thought I should repost it for everyone to see.

This is a good list to read on a regular basis. Sometimes I get so caught up in the busyness of life, that I miss what matters most. Thanks for posting it, Rosemary. I hope you're doing well.

"Imaginary things" always give me a lot of trouble!

This is a great list. I'm surely going to save it. Thank you!

Pam -- I have been on a weeding frenzy this week and I am almost finished. Thankfully I have a dumper cart. I don't think I have ever been so overwhelmed by weeds and poison ivy. I have saved the overgrown spot with the latter for today. I will be covered from head to toe and will jump in the shower when I finish. I have had PI three times this year already when I ran into it by accident. Wish me luck.
I think this is a wise and realistic list and I'm glad you like it. Enjoy the long Labor Day weekend and Happy first day of September. Rabbit, rabbit. xo, Rosemary

Gretchen Joanna -- I hear you. Those "imaginary things" after turning out the light to go to sleep are the worst, right? Have a great Labor Day weekend. xo, Rosemary

Thanks. Good words to live by. The voices in my head are always coming after me like a bunch of mosquitoes. About the weeds, I've read that poison ivy is getting more prolific, and causing more irritation, because of climate change. I imagine it's a situation that affects many plants. We have a choke cherry tree next to our driveway. This year we've been inundated with the berries (or tiny cherries) it produces. I can't remember ever having to go out every day to sweep those pesky, messy berries away. This year, I sometimes have to go out two or three times to sweep. I just look at all the weeds and sigh. One day. Actually, I read a note from the gardener at Highland Hall (he always has good tips} that this is the time to go after crabgrass because now is when it produces loads of seeds. So, your motto about 'it's easier to keep up than catch up' really applies to weeding, too. They can get out of control so easily. Pat yourself on the back.

Thank you for posting these wise words, Rosemary, as relevant today as they were nearly 150 years ago.
I hope you have a good weekend and do watch out for that poison ivy!

mia -- I have always had poison ivy on my property but this year it's POISON IVY in all caps. I have never seen it be so prolific. My plan worked yesterday. Wool knee socks, long pants tucked into knee high boots, cotton turtle neck tee shirt tucked into pants and a long sleeved shirt on top of turtle neck. I have some leather gloves with long cuffs that snap tight and I wore a tennis hat. I was very conscious of not touching my face while working for at least three hours straight. I undressed at the washing machine and then showered. So far, so good. I hope to finish today and take advantage of the cool weather. I am sure you are right about climate change being the reason for the poison ivy and weed explosion.
I'm glad you like the rules for living. Have a good Labor Day. xo, Rosemary

Tasha T -- So far, so good with the poison ivy removal. I am hoping to finish today. It's rampant and I'm sure I left some roots behind but now I will try to pull them before the vines get so long. Robert Louis Stevenson's words have stood the test of time and are so relevant today as you mentioned. I have a printed copy in a standing frame near my desktop computer in my attic office. Enjoy the nice September weather before fall sets in. xo, Rosemary
