NEW BIRD PHOTOS

Mourning Dove looking to the right,

Here she is looking to the left with her tail feathers in the water.

Male cardinal feeding from the ground.

The sun was at the perfect angle to capture this male cardinal's true color. He wears his red feathers proudly, doesn't he?

Enjoy this lovely Sunday.

What a beautiful day. So wonderful to see the sun and the birds. I've always loved mourning doves. When we lived on the farm, we had a pair who would nest in a large shrub, located next to a bedroom window. I loved watching them work and raise their young. They seemed to be very good parents.

Pam -- I love my mourning doves too and I have quite a few. The male incubates the eggs by day and the female by night. Isn't that sweet? They take turns from the very beginning! I learned this from my new bird book. It also says the nest is constructed from twigs so thin the eggs can be seen through it. They produce a protein rich secretion from their throats called "pigeon's milk" to feed their young so they can nest almost anytime of year. I didn't know that! Other birds have a much harder time hunting for food to feed their little ones.
I hope you have a good week. My Monday is filled with bright sunshine.

You must have enjoyed having your dove family outside your bedroom window at your farm.

Rosemary, I didn't know that mourning doves produce "pigeon milk" for their young. That is fascinating!

Pam, I found that bird fact fascinating too. Mourning doves and pigeons don't have to forage for insects and caterpillars to feed their young they way most other birds do because they produce their own milk. Of course the have to feed themselves and they eat a lot of seeds. They are always welcome at my feeder.
