Bluebird Sighting This Morning

February is the month Eastern bluebirds start their search for a nesting spot. I looked out my bathroom window and saw one sitting atop my bluebird house this morning and I was thrilled. By the time I returned with my camera he was gone. This photo was one of my bluebirds that landed on my balcony railing and you can understand why I find them so thrilling, can't you. There is another photo of this handsome guy on an old blog post of mine HERE. Have a great Sunday.

What a beautiful bird. I see bluebirds down herein Dallas occasionally--more in really cold weather when they come looking for something to eat. I do feed birds daily in our backyard.

Your photo is just wonderful! I enjoy your blog very very much!

Susan -- I have never seen bluebirds at my feeder. I know you can put out dried mealworms for them but I don't have that type of feeder. At my house it's black oil sunflower seeds exclusively. I'm glad to hear you have bluebirds too. They are the most beautiful of all birds. xo,, Rosemary

A few days ago, I was looking out a window, and there was a bluebird swooping by. He was the first I've seen this season. I dearly love them and my old heart went pitter pat.

I only a couple of weeks ago removed last year's bluebird nest from my bluebird house -- I hope the birds didn't come looking before then, as they might have written me off... I was amazed when last year bluebirds were checking out my avian lodgings so long before they eventually built a nest.

Pam -- I think each and every bluebird sighting is thrilling and it sounds as if you do too. xo, Rosemary

Gretchen Joanna -- They will probably be back to check out your nest box again. Maybe they even watched you clean it out for them. Fingers crossed. I keep checking mine in case the wrens start building in mine before the bluebirds get a chance. xo, Rosemary

Such a pretty colourful bird. It brings back happy memories of holidays in New England where I saw them for the first time. Thank you for posting, Rosemary.

Tasha T -- You are welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the nest building video too. Seeing a bluebird is always a sweet memory whether on vacation or not. xo, Rosemary

He's a beauty. That's for sure. I've only see Blue Jays where I live, never Blue Birds. The Jays are pretty, especially the crested Blue Jays, but they are sort of the bullies of the bird world. The minute they appear, all the other little birds leave.

Several times chickadees nested in my bluebird house. Will you chase off the wrens, or do you just want to know...?

Gretchen Joanna -- I would never chase a chickadee out of my nesting box. So far, I have only had house wrens building dummy nests there before their final nest is constructed atop this big pile of sticks. I added two links to the bottom of this postsabout this problem with house wrens only. Please read. xo, Rosemary

We have them in my neighborhood, and I've never seen so many out and about until this year. They are camera shy however, there was one taking a bath in my birdbath, and I quietly pulled up my iPhone to photograph him and he flew away. There are several nesting bird houses hanging in trees in the area. I'm always happy to see them.
I love the picture you have.

Karen B. -- The mild winter must be agreeing with your bluebirds. They are camera shy and my best photos of them were taken from afar with a telephoto lens on my Nikon. I hope all of the nesting boxes in your neighborhood are occupied by bluebirds this spring. I think the bluebird in this photo was taken from my living room through the glass of a French door that opens out to this corner of my balcony. I'm glad you like it. xo, Rosemary
