My husband's office is on our second floor and he's always wanted to punch a hole in the ceiling to build a cupola on top of the roof as a small place to go to relax and gaze out at the surrounding area. (He'll do it if he really wants but I'm not encouraging him. Sounds like too much of a project!) ;o) However, I do agree with you that cupolas are very attractive.

I wonder: is it a real room with a staircase leading to it or does it have a purely decorative purpose?

Unknown -- Not a real room, think skylight. It also helps release the hot air below like an attic fan. The decorative value is priceless. xo, Rosemary

Mama Pea -- I love your husband's idea. I would love one atop my barn garage but my town has a height requirement and a cupola would make my building too tall. I think your husband really wants a treehouse. His office might be too cold in the winter with that hole in the ceiling! xo, Rosemary

We had a cupola on our first red brick cottage and loved it. As you already said, Rosemary, ours had been place directly above a whole-house exhaust fan (that sounded like a jet taking off). They sure do add charm. My husband is always spotting various cupolas on the rooftops of old barns. The one pictured is wonderful!

Pam, That was a great idea putting a cupola to conceal the exhaust outlet for an attic fan. I love attic fans and wish I had one. They are so nice at night. xo, Rosemary

It's wonderful, and I love cupolas, but the architecture of my house does not lend itself to cupolas.
