It's a dreary Friday here at my cottage. I spent the first two hours in a webinar for continuing education credits for my real estate license. The sun is supposed to come out later this afternoon and maybe I will rake some wet leaves.
I enjoyed reading this BBC fascinating article about dog breeds that time forgot. See link below:
Listen to a 7 minute segment on NPR about Turn Spit Dogs. There is an illustration too:

Have a great weekend.

What an adorable post! I adore your posts....and have for so many years!!
The stuffed bears on your ads on your side of your posts.....the black one looks just like the bear that came to eat my chickens! 4 times! He ate 18! Rosemary, I love my chickens.....I don't name them because my daughter told me years ago, when I was crying over my favorite rooster "Eduardo"; who was killed by a hawk.....my daughter said..."Mommy, if you are going to make pets of the bottom of the food chain; don't name them". Smart girl. Still so wise. She was only 19; now 51!
Anyway, I love the bear; and will do anything I can to protect him/her.
Got new chickens...some gifts....lots of the same breed....and 3 survived from the 44 year flock! (descendents)
I may need to buy that bear from Scully and Scully!
thank you for your fabulous blog posts!
It really is interesting to think about how dogs (and other animals) were often bred to serve a specific purpose. When I was young and on the farm, my grandfather and father trained collies to help heard our cows. We had large herds, and once trained, those dogs could literally work circles around a human. Life changes, though, and that affects which breeds survive. Great article, Rosemary. Have a good weekend. We're getting cooler weather and I think it might be heading your way.
what an interesting article. thank you for sharing it!
my heart broke reading (and then seeing the drawing) of the spit dog... who was bred to run like a hamster in the wheel by the fire... just to turn the meat being cooked.
cruelty never entered the minds of that century apparently.
it's incredible how self serving mankind has always been.
tammy j -- Tam, I almost didn't post after I read about the kitchen spit dogs and their dreadful work lives. This must be a well hidden part of dog history because I have never heard it before. Thankfully, a machine was invented to relieve this kitchen task of turning the spit on an open fire. Have a great weekend. xo, Rosemary
Penelope Bianchi -- Penny, I had to look up that bear you mentioned and learned it was a footstool. How perfect for you! Your wise daughter was right about naming pets that are prey animals. I hope your electric fence is still working to keep the black bear away. Have a great weekend. xo, Rosemary
