Huntboard Nook in My Kitchen

This is a corner of my kitchen, snapped this morning, that backs up to my attic staircase. My refrigerator is to the right and above that is a lookout window from my attic into the kitchen below. There are interior shutters if I want to close it off for any reason but I usually leave them open. It helps with the airflow when the central air is running and in the winter, the rising heat helps keep it warmer up there. Last night's rain from Henri wasn't too bad and for that I am so very grateful. Be safe if you are in the eye of the storm today. xo

Your home is so cozy and I find decorating inspiration from your posts. I live in an 1890 Colonial in NY and love old quaint houses. Heavy rain today but thankfully not much wind. Safe safe and dry in your beautiful home.

Visiting your house would take forever because I would insist that I be allowed to see every nook and cranny. What a delight!

What a lovely huntboard! I like all the wood, and soft light in that corner--so inviting. A perfect place for displaying art and loved objects. Very glad to hear Henri didn't cause you too much trouble, Rosemary!

Dana -- I'm glad to hear you find my cozy cottage inspiring. Your antique home sounds delightful. It rained all day and will continue all night and maybe all day on Monday but at least we haven't had wind. The rain has been constant but not torrential. I am so relieved. Stay dry.

Pam, The huntboard is special because it was my mother's. It really is perfect in my nook and is good storage for linens and other things. Lots of my favorite things are displayed there. Henri has been kind but I'll be glad when he's gone.

The most charming and meaningful kitchen and cottage ever! The reason is that everything has a story.....the cottage is your autobiography......I think every house should be just that. A story of your life.....memories, collections, things you purchased on trips, inheritances from meaningful people....things you found.....

Your cottage is the epitome of my philosophy of decorating. I have been a professional decorator for 50 years. That means, paying customers....jobs big and small......the older I have become, the jobs have been bigger and bigger....which is a good thing. When I started 50 years ago; there were few "professional decorators" in Southern California.....maybe anywhere....but I loved it, and I continued. It became a major career; and I received astonishingly large commissions....a total surprise to me.
My philosophy has not changed. Your house should be filled with meaningful things, That kind of "decorating" is timeless. "Trends" are to be avoided like the plague. Buy things you love; and they will go together seamlessly. If you don't have an "eye" (as you do, Rosemary) hire someone to help you.
Decorating is expensive...mistakes are so expensive it is astonishing. Hire a professional.....and chose carefully. Oh gosh....all this advice, and I was just admiring your divine and meaningful cottage. The epitome of my philosophy of 50 years! Forgive me!

I absolutely adore your huntboard nook! It’s so nice to have room for furniture in a kitchen. Truly lovely.

It's wonderful, and so inviting! Did you redecorate or change the lighting in your cottage, Rosemary? Everything just looks fabulous.

Another Californian here who is requesting that you do a rain dance for us, please!

Penelope Bianchi -- I appreciate the praise coming from such a seasoned professional interior designer. I agree with your philosophy totally. I wish I could have sent my overabundance of rain your way but I couldn't.

Debbie -- I don't have a separate dining room so this nook was perfect for my huntboard. I like furniture in a kitchen too.

Lisa D. -- My kitchen was once a galley kitchen with a separate dining room and a screened porch off the DR. I gutted everything and it's all new including the wide-board pine flooring. The dark paneling in the nook was reclaimed wood from the attic floors. The porch became my pantry. I wish I could have sent you some rain and I hope you get some soon.
