I could never determine whether this was a butterfly or a moth. It stayed in place for a very long time flapping its wings and staying still. My still photo is shown above (click to enlarge). I posted my video on Instagram yesterday. See it here. Click on the white arrow to start the movement of the wings. I love the antennae that look like threaded beads.

Butterflies are actually moths. (They just have their makeup on!)
A beautiful capture, Rosemary. And don't you love the name, "Pearl Crescent!"
Pam -- Pearl Crescent. Yes!!! I am delighted to know the name of my butterfly.

Lisa -- I did some research after taking the photo because I thought the body looked like a moth. This is what made me think it was a butterfly:
"Butterfly antennae are thin with club-shaped tips, compared with the feathery or comb-like antennae of moths." I really wasn't positive until Kay G. told me the name. I have seen some really gorgeous photos of moths wearing their makeup.

I am just starting to learn about butterflies and moths myself, and I appreciate learning that little difference in their antennae!
