New Year's Day 2018

I looked through my posts over the past year and came up with this layout for my best nine photos of 2017. The one in the center with my mother is my favorite. The only resolution I made this year is to drink more water and it's one I think I can keep.
I ate blackeyed peas, greens and cornbread for good luck in 2018. Actually, I cheated a little since I didn't have any leafy greens like kale or collards that are traditional so I made Broccoli Cornbread and it was delicious. I used olive oil instead of melted butter and used only 1/2 cup. Next time I will use even less and it needed a little more salt. I cooked it in an iron skillet and since my gas oven is a little off temperature-wise, I set it at 400° and cooked it for 40 minutes and that was perfect. It was more like a quiche than cornbread but it was still good with the peas. I had a big bag of broccoli so I just took out what I thought was a good amount and chopped it when it was almost defrosted and it measured 2 cups.
I got up pretty early even though I stayed up until midnight to ring in the New and started undecorating my house while the coffee brewed. By 8:30 it was all done. The boxes are back in the attic but not in my Christmas closet yet. I will do that tomorrow when I get back from the dentist for my first cleaning of the year. See you after that. xo

You accomplished much on this first day of 2018. I put away the Christmas things and cleaned. Tomorrow I want to make a big pot of wholesome soup. Too many goodies eaten over the holidays.

I like the picture of you and your mother, also. It reminds me of that special bond that is possible between moms and daughters. I'm thankful for pictures and memories that allow us to revisit those times when we had them near. Happy New Year!

Rosemary . . . good for you and for us ALL! I love your first things first focus: gather and pack Christmas trimmings, go to the dentist. I seldom make a New Year's Resolution but now that I am retired, I have been thinking there must be one I can complete/adhere to and then, there it was . . . the centerpiece photo for your 2017 posts, you with your mother . . . I SHALL find a way to scan, assemble and annotate my family photos in order to keep them safe and in a format to share. See, you've done it once again - inspired me.
I am so grateful.

Pam .. I made a wholesome vegetable stew without a recipe. I soaked some chick peas overnight and cooked them in a big pot on the stove with everything I could find in the refrigerator and freezer and I have been eating it for several days. It's delicious. And my broccoli cornbread was super special this morning when I got home from the dentist's office. I split the wedges and toasted them in the toaster oven. Spread with Kerry Gold salter butter, they were delicious. I have already had one too many slices. So yummy.
Thank you for your kind comments. I love that old photo of my mother and me in the early 1970s.

Linda -- I am happy to hear I have inspired you to gather all your old family photos and put them in a format to share. You will find a way, I'm sure. I just photographed an old snapshot of my mother and me with my iPhone and cropped it and enhanced the color, all with the photo editing tool on the phone. Putting photos on Instagram is a good way to share them.
