Wouldn't it be nice to have a garden that didn't require a fence? My grandparents never had one around theirs in various gardens big and small. Stevan Dohanos - Victory Garden [1951]
There are many community gardens here in Portland, Oregon with no fences...and as I walk around my neighborhood there are gardens in the front yards of many homes completely open. I feel as though they are left alone as I have seen them return year after year.
Carrie -- You make Portland sound very appealing. You can't possibly imagine the lengths the people in my area go to in preventing deer. They don't just fence in their vegetable and flower gardens but their entire properties! They put cattle grates on their driveway entrances and deer fencing around the rest. I just try to plant things the deer don't like. It is really a losing battle. I've heard we have more deer now than when the Pilgrims landed and the tick born illnesses that go with them. Portland sounds wonderful. xo, Rosemary

We've never had a fence in over forty years of gardening.

Nan -- How very wonderful to hear. You must not have deer in your area. They are a big problem in my area.
