The primarily white kitchen has butcher-block countertops. I wouldn't want this half-wall looking into the formal dining room. I wouldn't want to look at the hanging pot rack in the kitchen from the dining room.
The Quinebaug River runs through the property.

Totally agree. Bad redo on the kitchen/formal dining room connection. If the color comes true in the photo, I also do not like the color of red in the dining room for a house of this period. If it is to be red, then in my mind's eye it should be a softer burgundy or plum.
But the house is to die for.
What a grand old home and property. I am happy for Renee Zellweger to have enjoyed it for a time because I have read more times than once that she is a fine person. Now, let's hope the next owner has more traditional instincts.

Linda...Well said. I agree that this fabulous is begging for fine furnishings that are in keeping with the early interior. Bring on the antiques!

Agreed. Pot racks are out. And I'd like to see a much softer color palette throughout. Rosemary, your beautiful furniture would feel right at home in this lovely house!
I whole heartedly agree with all the above comments and can only add that the river setting is beautiful.
