Beautiful Oakleaf Hydrangea

I took this photo yesterday at my friend Kelly's house. Her oakleaf hydrangeas have really taken off this year and they are beautiful. I learned through some internet research that this variety and the Annabelle are the only two varieties that are native to the US. I love planting shrubs that are natives, don't you? I want to plant several of each and the Annabelle will be in honor of my mother Anna.

I live in Hoover, AL. The home to the Snowflake Oakleaf...propagated by Eddie Aldridge waaaay back when - from a cutting brought from an unknown bush to his dad by an old lady who was saving them from an old house that was to be torn down.

They are world famous now and walking through Aldridge Gardens is always a pleasure to see all types of hydrangeas - my favorites. I have a ton of french blues in yard and inherited a nice stand of Snowflakes when I bought this house. They say summer to me.

I lived in Alabama from the time I was an infant (born in Georgia) until the 4th grade when my family moved to Pennsylvania.
Any type of Hydrangea says summer to me! I hope you have a great July 4th holiday.
