My Kitchen and Presidents' Day

This is one of my favorite photos of my kitchen. A few things have changed -- there is now a microwave on the counter to the left of my tall case clock. The electrical outlet behind the artwork on an easel was faulty and I finally had an electrician fix it along with a few others outside a while back. My kitchen table was a mess all weekend but I finished my taxes and am in the process of clearing it off again.

When I was in school, we celebrated George Washington's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays separately but now they are grouped together for Presidents' Day in order to have a long weekend.

Abraham Lincoln February 12, 1809
Have a great Monday.

First of all, your kitchen is charming! Question..how did you mount your lovely tole tray on your wall? I have a collection of trays and would love to use your idea! Again, I look forward to your blog and love your cottage. I live in a Sears Roebuck lakeside cottage that retains its original features although updated through the years! Linda

Linda (Anonymous) -- I was lucky. This tole tray already had a large hanging device on the back. It was like a giant plate hanger. I was hyperventilating while standing on the counter to hang it since I don't like heights. I got it right on my first try thanks to good measuring. It's staying there forever.
Try google for this: "Tripar 15 In. to 30 In. Brass Wire Plate Hanger"
Good luck, Rosemary

I love your kitchen, Rosemary, especially the open beam and wood ceiling. Wood always adds such warmth to to room.

I've always loved your kitchen, Rosemary. It's pleasing to the eye, yet appears to be very functional. That's the goal for most of us!

Your whole cottage makes me so happy! I LOVE the way you arrange things - and the colors:) You would be the perfect realtor - because I could tell you - in a few words - what I'm looking for and you would know EXACTLY what I'm talking about:)) Enjoy your evening xoxoxxo Karen

Such a beautiful kitchen, Rosemary, I'm quite envious. The colour scheme is delightful and so right for the space - deep colour without taking away any light. It must be a real pleasure to work there.

Lisa D. -- I love my wooden ceiling and I have it in the attic too. The beams are old floorboards from the attic. I'm glad you like my kitchen. xo, Rosemary

Pam, I agonized over the layout. I made a cardboard template the size of my farm table to make sure it would look right. My contractor wanted me to have a center island but the kitchen was the only place for my beloved farm table so I won the argument in the end. The customer is always right and I can't imagine my kitchen any other way. xo, Rosemary

Karen -- You would be the perfect client too😘 I keep rearranging things. Right now I have a long hooked runner in front of the sink and have moved another oriental rug behind the two windsor chairs on the left side and it looks very nice. Thank you for your kind words. xo, Rosemary

Tasha T -- I had the old red paint on my cabinets custom mixed to match the legs and base of my farm table. Luckily it has a drawer I could take to the paint store. It never feels dark and it's a pleasure to work there. I'm so glad you like it. xo, Rosemary

I do love your kitchen. It looks like it functions quite well.

Thanks for posting the link about George Washington. I’m going to find a good book to read more about him.

I’ll be moving this year and hope I can find a place that I can make my own the way your home reflects you.

Brenda -- My place looks nothing like it did inside when I bought it. It was a labor of love restoring it and I hope you can find a place to call your own too. My original kitchen was a small galley kitchen with a separate dining room where my farm table is now. My "pantry" behind my grandfather clock was a small screened-in porch. The ceiling in the main room was raised to incorporate the part of my attic where you could not stand up. The beams are those attic floor boards. I will post other views of my kitchen soon. xo, Rosemary

Rosemary, thank you for the back story of your home. Did you design the changes yourself or did you have someone advise you? It looks like it’s always been that way which to my way of thinking is a good change.

Brenda, I did it all myself with the help of a very talented woodworker who did beautiful work. I cleaned up at the end of every day with my big shop vac so the workmen could start the next day with a clean slate. I helped where I could and went to pick up needed items that would fit in my SUV. I enjoyed every minute too.
