This peafowl photo is a repeat. The peacock lived on a farm nearby but is no more. He and some other animals were killed and eaten by a bear recently and I just learned about the attack. Another friend lost a pet goat the same way last year during the summer. I forgot to bring my hanging bird feeder inside last night but it was okay this morning. This is a note to self not to forget again! Have a great weekend. xo

So sorry to hear of the bear destruction of so many animals/poultry in your area. Seeing bears are not unusual around here but it's the timber wolves (and coyotes) that are known for killing livestock and family dogs. I guess we have to chalk it off to the way of nature, but an attack by a wild animal is never pleasant. Before we had our main area fenced in, we had more than one bird feeder destroyed by a bear. We have one feeder (in the summer) for the hummingbirds that is out of the protected area but my husband takes it in every night and then hangs it back up in the morning. A couple of years ago, we had a mama bear and three cubs come right up to an open kitchen window one morning while I was frying bacon. One can never be too careful though.
Mama Pea -- Yes, it's nature's way. The bears are becoming very commonplace in residential areas around the 12 square mile Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge near me. We have lots of other open spaces preserved for recreation and wildlife so we must always be alert. We have coyotes too but I don't know about timber wolves. When I have Missy I don't venture very far from the house for night walks. That must have been both thrilling and frightening to see the mama bear and her three cubs checking out your bacon. Sorry you can't have winter bird feeders anymore. I probably shouldn't either but I am being super cautious because I enjoy my birds so much. xo, Rosemary
