Saturday Blooms

Random blossoms from my back yard shot yesterday (Friday) after mowing with the walk-behind mulching mower when the grass was finally dry enough. Today I'll do the front before the afternoon rain that may or may not transpire. All the hydrangeas are outperforming this year as you can see. The first photo is a gift from a neighbor as a thank you for a favor. At first I thought it was a potted plant but after research I learned it is a compact hydrangea. The label said summer splendor but all I could find online was red splendor. Anyway I am going to plant it and see what happens. My neighbor said it was deer resistant too. I am going to love something with such vibrant colors. The second photo is my Lacecap Hydrangea and the third and fourth are my Limelight that has become a tree this year this year rather than a woody shrub. Last year, I cut back the bottom branches to encourage this and it worked. Have a great weekend. xo

Everything is beautiful Rosemary! I just planted an oak leaf hydrangea this year, as well as a "smooth hydrangea". I'm anxious for them to mature. I believe the first plant is an annual...Lantana. I buy it every year to put in a wheelbarrow with a mixture of other plants. I love the color & find that it tolerates some shade. A tip for you concerning this plant...as the flowers fade & a sort of seed head appears, you will get blooms more quickly if you keep those snipped off. I have even cut all the seed heads, as well as blooms about 10-14 days before having company & usually have a plant full of blooms when I want them.

I love pics of your plants because they always look so healthy.

...all is grace!

Anita ~ the cabin on the creek -- Anita, Thank you. You caught me just in time before I dug a hole in the ground. I am good at deadheading and won't let the lantana to to seed. Your wheelbarrow planter sounds amazing. And thank you for reminding me that I need an oak leaf hydrangea in my life. They are native plants and one of my favorites.

Your plants look so very healthy! We've had lots of rain, and I'm guessing hydrangeas must thrive with moisture. That lantana nearly glows--gorgeous colors! Hope you enjoy the weekend, Rosemary!

That first plant looks like a lantana - I have the same one in a pot. It is an annual in my climate - Wisconsin. I’m sure in yours as well.

Love the hydrangea, and have had a desire to plant some in my yard for some time now, but we are SO dry here in California, and they recently put more restrictions on how much water we use. It's getting to the scary stage. I've practically had to let my lawn go. Having a lawn in CA is almost worthy of committing a crime. Some people still do, but they usually have water storage systems. Thanks for the very flowery post, Rosemary.

Jeannine -- Yes, you are right. My first Lantana and I love it but am sad to learn it's only an annual.

Pam -- The rain this year in the east is never ending. It rained twice after I mowed yesterday, then more rain during the night, and twice this morning. I'm having a great weekend in spite of the rain.

Lisa D. -- I wish I could send some of my rain to you in California. My lawn is mostly weeds so I just call it my yard. I don't have a regular mowing schedule but it is always at least two weeks since the last one and usually more. I'm glad you enjoyed my flowers.

you can propagate lantana cuttings, I know you have other cuttings that you overwinter. This should be fine in a sunny window till you can place them back outside. Love your hydrangeas. I have one very old one that is gorgeous and purple flowers. All the new ones I have planted are struggling and look awful due to the hot hot weather we have had an the off and on rain inconsistency. I hope they last till Fall.

Caroline -- I watched a couple of youtube videos on propagating lantana and I thank you for the suggestion. It's too pretty a plant to let die so I will take some cuttings and overwinter them as well as the mother plant. I hope your newly planted hydrangeas will make it into the cooler weather. Keep babying them until then.
