Snow Update

UP WITH THE BIRDS

I was actually up before the birds this morning. We got another foot of snow yesterday and I started my shoveling at 3:00 in the afternoon when it started to diminish. My car was already melting and that cleanup was relatively easy. The undisturbed snow was like powdered sugar and not at all heavy except at the road where the snowplows dumped the ugly wet stuff. I was almost up to that point when an angel appeared! My newest neighbor across the street walked from his driveway to mine with his snowblower and cleared the stuff I was dreading in a flash including digging out my mailbox. You can't imagine how much time this saved me. I was back in my cottage at 5:00; without his help it probably would have taken me another hour or or two to dig myself out. I am going to ask him to help me pick out a snowblower for myself for next year. I went to bed extra early and woke up refreshed just in time to attend to my feathered friends with my outside thermometer reading single digits. xo

Good Morning! This is the first time I've written to you but I faithfully read you every morning. I bought my snowblower, a Honda HS55, (I don't know if they make this model any more), and it's been serviced once in all those years - the tires dried out and failed. Back in 1986 I had 163' of city sidewalk to shovel plus my driveway and there was one snowstorm too many and I decided, that's it, I'm buying a snowblower. I was young and single and it was more than I wanted to pay but I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I asked 2 lady neighbours if they wanted to share in the purchase but they declined so I was on my own for the cost. Well, that machine has never let me down. Start up at the beginning of the season is a little slow as I have to pull the cord a number of times, but after that it starts on the first pull. I was advised not to get a snowblower with tank tracks, just tires. Hope your shopping goes well. Cathy

We're envying you your snow this morning compared to our -19° thermometer reading with a 42° below wind chill factor. (Yes, that's nasty.) Our birds (bless their little fluffed out bodies) are hitting our feeders with gusto. Bless your good neighbor with his snow blower, too.

Mama Pea -- I cannot believe your low thermometer reading of 19 below zero. I think mine was only a balmy 7° this morning. And you chill factor of 42 below zero, too dangerous to be outdoors. Be careful and just stay inside if you can. I know you are probably well prepared with firewood and food you have frozen or canned. I will leave a thank you gift in my neighbor's mailbox after the postman delivers the mail. Stay safe.

Cathy -- Thank you for your encouragement to buy a snowblower. Your Honda sounds amazing. I am not young but I am healthy and strong and enjoy being independent. I just looked at the 9 day forecast on my phone and 7 of them have snow predictions-----including today😩

bless wonderful angel neighbors like yours!
and I LOVE the picture of your birds having breakfast! my favorite birds have always been the tiny sparrows. I think of them as the common folk of the bird world! xoxo

tammy j -- I have been trying to get an individual portrait of all the visitors to my feeder. I hope I can get a good sparrow for you. Yes! My new neighbor is indeed an angel. He and his wife and three children moved in a few days before the Covid-19 quarantine so we only see them from afar or by text messages. Luckily, they have family locally and aren't really new to the area, just to a different house.

How wonderful to have help from your neighbor. It always encourages me to hear of acts of kindness. We had temps hovering near zero earlier this morning. I got up early to get my Covid-19 vaccine at our local health department. They had many volunteers, signs, and hoop sheds to protect all of us. It was a drive-through system. My heart swelled as I saw all those committed souls out in the cold, helping us senior citizens. We've had so much negativity in our world, lately, but people like your neighbor and the health dept volunteers, really do help balance things out. Sure hope the weather forecast is wrong about all that snow, Rosemary!!

Catherine -- My new neighbor is so kind and I am so thankful. Yes, the red bird is a Cardinal and they are so beautiful, especially in the snow.

Jd -- I didn't even notice the mistake because I read "finial".

Pam -- Congratulations on getting your Covid-19 vaccine! I've been trying with no luck getting an appointment. I'm sure I will get one eventually and I would love a drive thru like your but I haven't heard of any. There's nothing like random acts of kindness to lift your spirits, is there?

Please keep us posted if you do decide on a snowblower! I’m on Long Island and we’ve been hit with lots of snow this year too! Thanks for your lovely photos and interesting posts!

What wonderful neighbors you have. You are so lucky. I still have not been able to get the vaccine, but things here in California are not so well organized. I love all your birds, Rosemary. Obviously, they love you too!

God Bless a good and thoughtful neighbor, what a relief to know you have such a caring new person living nearby. Do buy a snowblower, it will be worth every penny you spend on it. I know you are strong and healthy but there is no reason to stress your back and heart to such a degree when you get these huge snow storms. I know you like to be independent, I do too, a snowblower will help you to remain so.
