Two Staircases: Polar Opposites

An architectural masterpiece built by hand before power tools existed.

No handrail. Better than a ladder but almost as steep. I am so happy to see nobody ever changed this.

The steep staircase is very representative of what's in Dutch farmhouses We lived in Holland for a year. When we went back a couple years ago to visit we rode our bicycles all over the country and stayed in their version of Airbnb's. It was wonderful. You should see the greyhaired Dutch run up and down those steep stairs !!

Whenever I read another article on " aging in place" in this country I want to scream. We are so worried about getting older that we don't prepare and stay healthy and active in the present ! Americans would do well to walk stairs as often as possible and get up and out rather than planning a new build with an elevator .

I love to see your posts about keeping your grass cut . You are fantastic ! c

My grandparents were german. Their little house had a similar staircase with a door in the kitchen. I think I went up there twice. But my grandmother slept up there on a regular basis. She was in her 90's when she passed away. Thanks for the post

I can't even imagine building the top staircase by hand. It's gorgeous. Yet, the bottom staircase is very appealing, also. The worn treads and the metal hardware on the door are charming, but totally functional. Great comparison!

The first staircase is a work of art, whereas the second hold so much more warmth and charm for me!

Loved all the comments on this post. That first staircase is truly a work of art and amazing craftsmanship and so beautifully photographed.

The second one is an early version of a gym stair stepping machine.
