Monarch Butterfly on Milkweed

I took this photo yesterday and happily my iPhone did a great job. This milkweed plant is very popular with all sorts of insects and butterflies. The plant has multiplied over the years and now it is a great companion for the limelight hydrangea next to it. As I have explained in the past, it is a volunteer that planted itself in the exact spot where it could thrive. See you later. xo

A gorgeous picture.

i do think the butterfly is some kind of swallowtail, not a monarch. Maybe a tiger swallowtail? There are so many kinds of swallowtails I can't keep up with all of them.

Not a monarch butterfly rather a swallowtail.

That is a lovely butterfly but it is a swallow tail. Monarchs have a rounded bottom wing and are orange.

Sorry to correct you but that is a beautiful Swallowtail butterfly.

Milkweed is a such a valuable plant. Rosemary, thank you for allowing them to grow! We have them, too, and the butterflies abound.

Jenny, john, stacey, and HalfmoonLili --- Thank you one and all. I knew almost immediately it was not a Monarch but I was too rushed to change it. I stand corrected!

Pam, I'm glad to hear you are a milkweed lover too. It is carefree and the butterflies and bees love it. Mine gets larger every year and the stalks are multiplying like crazy.
