Built to Last

I adore the carved stonework around the recessed door and the stone window surround. There is almost nothing requiring paint and upkeep and nothing to attract insect infestation. This is my idea of a forever house where you can just get on with living and enjoying rather than maintaining. Sadly, this thinking has gone out the window unless the end user has full control of the construction process and access to old world craftsmen who are not in a rush. The flowers are the icing on the cake. via

You're right Rosemary, there isn't much attention to detail or permanence in most newer homes. This old stone house is a gem! I can't even imagine what it would cost to replicate it. Those lovely bright pink flowers in front look like lilies, but I've never seen that color. So vibrant!

My dream house would be made of stone.

Rosemary, by any chance have you seen the show "Escape to the Chateau" on PBS? It is about an English couple who sell their place in London and buy a decrepit castle that was built in the 1800's, and bring it back to life. It's amazing how some people can take on a task such as that.

Pam -- I agree. There are far too few homes that are built or restored to last and be inheritable. Maybe someone will know the name of those bright pink flowers you like.

lisa -- Mine too. Our atmosphere has changed so much it damages our houses. I know an old painter who says that when he started out 50 years ago, all that green stuff that collects on surfaces and has to be power washed off wasn't around back then. I do realize that old stone houses often need some repointing and I am wondering about the grout that is used today? I'm hoping it hasn't changed too much and will last.

lisa -- I have not heard of "Escape to the Chateau" on PBS. I'll google it and cross my fingers it will be coming to my area soon. It definitely sounds like my kind of TV enjoyment. Thanks for the recommendation. I recently signed up for a one-year subscription to Acorn TV and I'm loving it since I cut my cord with cable.
