Floor to Ceiling Double Hung Window

This could be a window at Monticello in Virginia, but I'm not sure. There was a time when doors were taxed and windows were not. This type of window was a work around. Love the long shadows!

I recall seeing these windows at James Madison's Montpelier, too.

Hi, I am a docent in a lighthouse here in Central California. Our keeper's residence has two of these jib windows. These are unusual in our part of the country but building plans for lighthouses were drawn by architects in Washington DC. I did some research on these windows because some of our docents were telling the tax story and I'm sorry to report that it isn't true. The only taxation of glass windows (which were a luxury item) happened in England and Wales from 1696-1851.

stacey -- Thank you for clearing up thetaxation story about these floor to ceiling windows in early American houses. I like to be accurate in my descriptions.
