Christmas Eve at My Cottage with Luminaria

Christmas Eve 2018 at My Cottage
I finally edited an iPhone photo and made it good enough to post. I used the photo editor built into my phone. I am so happy my across-the-street neighbors invited me to participate in luminaries to set out on Christmas Eve. I did my walkway too and it was magical. The long-burning fat candles amazed me. I had no idea they would burn between 10 and 12 hours depending on the wind conditions. My neighbors ordered the bags and candles here. This is going to be a tradition for me for sure. I took this photo about 10:30 pm when the full moon was above my cottage and the stars were plentiful and bright. Only 6 families signed up, two next to me and three contiguous properties on the other side. Several friends said they drove through and commented on how beautiful it was. Maybe more will participate next year. I hope so. One more day until year's end. Where did it go? xo

They are really pretty. I was concerned about them catching fire, but after reading the source I see that they are obviously made from a fire retardant material. (We Californians are so fearful when it comes to fires!)

all of the elements aligned: moon, stars, lights from within the Cottage with luminaries leading to it . . . simply magical

Hoping to begin this tradition next year on our little street

I love this tradition, we did this when we lived in Europe. Your cottage with the moon and luminaries looks absolutely magical. I prefer this type of simple Christmas decoration over everything outside be lit up like Las Vegas. I have never seen as many exterior lights on homes as I've seen in Utah. There are companies that start putting them up around October. My neighbors were trying to persuade me to do it but that's just not my thing. A natural wreath on the door and a natural evergreen swag the around the door with a few twinkle lights plus candles in the windows comprises my exterior Christmas celebration.

This is a beautiful custom.Thank you for sharing the photo. When I lived in New Mexico for a few years I was thrilled to be part of a region that carries on this tradition.

It does look lovely. I like it better than the super bright lights that are so popular now. Our suburban street has done this for many years, but further down from us. We tried to get our block to join in, but it never caught on with our block. So, we look down the street to get the effect.
