Those books look like they might be a set of encyclopedias. As far as I know, my father is the only person who actually read encyclopedias. Maybe it's a matched set of classics, though, so people might actually sit there to read.
Linda Sand - Linda, I have a beautiful set of very large, leather-bound encyclopedias. They were printed in London in 1874 and the spines are decorated in gold stamping from top to bottom. The edges of the pages are marbled too. They look beautiful on one of my bookcase shelves and because they were reference books, they were very reasonably priced. I must confess I don't read them as your father did but books do make a home. xo, Rosemary

I have always thought it would be fun to have a Harry Potteresque niche under the stair.
