New House Looks Old Birmingham, AL

That old world charm coupled with fantastic traditional interiors and a nice balance of masculine and feminine qualities, this Birmingham, Alabama abode is an absolute stunner. Built for the architect himself, this was constructed by James F. Carter with interior design by Jane Hawkins Hoke. Image courtesy of James F. Carter. More views here at his website. Click on the word VIEW in the logo to see all of his work. I think most of the interior photos in the slideshow are of this amazing house. Swoon!

I agree, this house is a stunner.

I love the smeared brick, you see that all over in the South on new homes built to look old. I have a friend who lives in Nashville and I've been able to see and go through some amazing houses often with this type of brick treatment. Actually my friend just had it done to her brick and it completely transformed the her house.

I wonder if they had to have the canopy bed made especially for the green bedroom? It is an amazing house.

The Queen Vee -- Victoria, I kept looking and looking for the canopy bed in the slideshow until I discovered the word VIEW in the logo. That bed in the Birmingham house might have been antique and they adjusted the rods to match the roofline. Thanks for making me look deeper into his website. His work is amazing.
I have never heard of "smeared brick" either. I've always called it whitewashed brick. Good to know another term. I love the treatment to tone down plain red brick.
I'm glad you liked the cafe curtain in a bathroom with antiques in another post. Will you make yours or have them made?
