I like this setup better than an island. This kitchen has plenty of counter space and really doesn't need one. I'm sure this big table doubles as one when needed.

One of our renovations has a big, old table in the center. Originally we figured we wouldn't have counters at all, but in the end, we have plenty of counter space AND a table. And a marble fireplace big enough to walk into. It makes for a convivial atmosphere for cooking.
We had limited counter space when I was a kid but I don't remember Mom ever using the table for food prep. I doubt she ever got past thinking the table was for eating. But I do remember her mother cutting and drying homemade noodles on her table so maybe I'm wrong about Mom's thinking. Too late to ask either of them now.
