A House in My Area from The Back

I liked this house much better from the rear when I attended a recent realtor open house. The front of the main house is now all stone and it was once an unassuming cape cod cottage. Everything was totally changed inside and out by the new owners when they bought it seven years ago. Sob. Need I say more?

I don't understand people who buy a house and then remodel it beyond recognition.

I totally understand upgrades when it comes to electrical and plumbing but please don't destroy the integrity of the house. Over the years, that poor house survived everything but the new owner.

Another travesty are those who purchase a perfectly lovely little cottage....for the land it sits on. The cottage is demolished and a ugly McMansion built in its place.

I think you can tell, you hit a nerve with me.

"Change" and "improve" are not synonymous.

Linda Sand and Gail, northern California ---

I am glad you two could read between the lines. I have to be careful what I say in my blog.

A friend sent me this interesting article that appeared on Bloomberg.com

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-08-23/mcmansions-define-ugly-in-a-new-way-they-re-a-bad-investment

There is the most wonderful link within the article that takes you to a blog called " Worst of McMansions "

http://www.mcmansionhell.com/

It is most entertaining. Let me know how you like it.

Thanks for the links, Rosemary. When I first started reviewing McMansionhell, I kinda' chuckled but then oddly enough, I experienced an overwhelming sadness for the owners.

I'm reminded now of the latest craze. The outdoor patio. Not satisfied with grilling some hotdogs on a barbecue grill, enjoying a few drinks with friends in the backyard. No. Now it's an entire kitchen and living room (that no one uses). Sad.

You really can have too much money.

(I love house-peeping! But then, don't all women. :-))

I feel your pain. to see something quite perfect already, be so changed. It seems such people would be better, to pick from something, already in their style. -sigh-

Hope it isn't too close to you, so you don't have to "morn," going by, too much. :-)

"Worst of McMansions" site. Ohhhhh, thank you. Bet I have a couple, to add to that site!!!

A couple of blocks away, where a sweet (but run down) cottage was, the most (insert your descriptive word here) McMansion is going up! Eeeek! Just eeeek! -sigh-

Luna Crone -- Glad you like the McMansion site I posted in comments. I have a real estate customer who wants to live on a street where all the homes are vintage and unspoiled. This is quite an order but I really don't blame him for wanting such a neighborhood. Of course there is no guarantee the next buyer will want to change the cottage they buy into a McMansion but I do believe they are on the wane. The builders who buy a property on spec to change it in such a tasteless manner (I almost typed Manor) are going to be stuck with them eventually. At least this is my hope. My street is a mixed bag. Everyone was up in arms when a contemporary was built on a vacant lot. I think it's fine. It's tasteful and has lovely landscaping. My own views are unspoiled and that makes me happy.
