When I look at this I can hear my mother calling me to supper. I would always reply...I'll be there as soon as I finish this page but it usually turned out to be the chapter. Reading was a huge part of my childhood. Enjoy your evening. xo
My Mother never understood my love of books and reading. She loved to spend her time at the sewing machine. Loved sewing even to the point of making doll clothes by hand when she was in assisted living. I would find a doll for her at a yard sale and she would dress it in frilly little dresses. Nothing ever gave her as much pleasure as sewing. In her very late years, when we had exchanged the mother/daughter roles, she would sometimes come back at me with a "and just how do you know so much?" after I had explained something to her, I would just say, "Because I read."
That was me also. I loved to take a book out under the big red maple tree in the summer. And yes I too must admit to finishing the chapter not the page, lol...
Oh my goodness, same here except I was always lying on my bed.... It was hard to tear me away from my books... sometimes I tried bringing my books with me to dinner but my dad didn't like that... lol
I love to read. When I was growing up in the summer I would get my books from a bookmobile, I would check out as many as I was allowed. Now quite often I stay up WAY past a reasonable bedtime reading, my excuse is always that I just need to finish the next chapter.
If you were to paint that picture today the child would be holding some sort of technology and most likely not a kindle or nook.
On a more positive child reading note... Harry Potter really gave a boost to children reading. I'm really grateful that most of my grands love to read.

Perfect illustration of what it means to get lost in a book. I love it.
Reminds me of another favorite: Jessie Willcox Smith

My late Mum taught me a love of books and then got upset when I'd shut myself away to read. I never could understand that point of view
Lois -- I'm on your side. Hiding away with a good book is one of the joys of life. xo, Rosemary
