The 11,100-square-foot, 14-room townhouse at 125 East 70th Street, built in 1965 by banking heir Paul Mellon and his wife, horticulturist Bunny Mellon, is under contract with an asking price of $46 million. Sotheby's is the listing agent. The contents were in the recent auction of Bunny Mellon's personal belongings. I recognize some of the interior pieces from the auction catalog here. There are many more photos of this lovely townhouse here showing more of her exquisite town and country taste. I'm not a jewelry person but for those of you who are, see her auction of jewels and objects of vertu here.

Lordy!
Stunning ... There was so much on Instagram the last couple weeks from this auction, I would love to see the catalog. Is it online? This is the first I've seen the contents within their setting. Will study it more when I get home.
I'm leaving shortly for the drive back to VA ... Been in CT for Thanksgiving. Hope you had a good one.
Karen in VA
Karen in VA -- yes. I just added a link to the auction catalog for the furnishings within my post.
I had a fabulous Thanksgiving. Glad you did too.

If I lived there, I'd never leave home.
Candice and Donna Baker.
Glad you both like it so much. I hope the new owners bought some of the furnishings at the auction. Wouldn't that be nice?

This townhouse was sold by the Mellons in something like 1996 or something......quite a while ago. They did not sell the contents!
What a compliment to the buyers that you thought you recognized things!
The buyers were creative, talented people; (I read all about them somewhere!)
None of the contents were sold to the buyers......they were all in the auction!
However; to the credit of the buyers (the lady being an antique dealer of very high repute) of antique Italian furniture; furnished it beautifully "a la Bunny"; (I am sure that is why she fell in love with it!) They changed none of the room's finishes.....and kept the garden the same......(Thanks be to GOD!!)
It is the most exquisite house in all of New York City (to my mind....) I am praying like minds purchase and preserve its quiet elegance!
I LOVE this post! I purchased these catalogues.....I will refer to them every day!
Beautiful house!
Penelope....You are right, the house sold a while ago but it came back on the market in 2013. The house last sold in 2006 for $22.5 million and it's currently under contract with the new asking price of twice the last sale price. I will try to keep an eye on it and see what it brings after the closing.
You were so smart to buy the auction catalogs. They are bringing huge prices on ebay.
