Still Not Touching!

This is becoming a game, I think. How close can he get without touching the new sofa? I'll keep you posted. See previous post for details.
I know there are those who think I am being mean. This was Webster's favorite spot on the floor rubbed up against my old sofa. The body oils he left behind were quite embarrassing. I cannot do this again. I put my old sofas outside near the road on Saturday hoping someone would pick them up. I had to pay someone on Monday morning to haul them away. Tabitha is sitting on a leather chair right now and that's allowed. I don't feel mean at all, just in charge. Webster is happy with two dog beds in the room, one looking out a front window and the other looking out a French door. Tabitha spent most of this rainy day on my bed on a nice blanket. I think my animals are lucky. I finally have a room I can be proud of and I want to keep it that way.

I don't think you're being mean at all. I once had the same experience with oil stains on the sofa from the dog. Your room looks lovely. I always enjoy when you show photos of your home.

Kathy...Thank you. I'm glad to hear someone else had the same problem with the oil stains.

As my dad would say, your pets have the 'life of Riley' -- lucky indeed!

Stay the course. You're ever so good to your pets, but they are pets and cannot appreciate the fine furniture. They won't be cleaning up after themselves, nor paying for new furniture. Living in your cozy cottage could hardly be a burden for them, so your rules are well within reason.
I have in-laws who had no patience for training their dogs. Various dogs over the years have been allowed to relieve themselves wherever they want. Believe me, it is not pleasant to be a guest in their house. The fact that the dogs own the furniture is actually the least of it. Dog hair on your clothes is a given.
I'm sure your guests will always appreciate a clean, pleasant smelling place to sit.

Good for you, Rosemary. I don't believe it's good to let our pets take over our home. Our living room sofa and club chair still have some oil stains from our first Scottish Terrier over 20 years ago. You have a lovely home, and I don't blame you for wanting to keep it looking pretty. :)

Hugs,

Denise

I love your living room - it's so cozy and warm and the new sofas are lovely. I totally understand the pet body oils thing. My parents have a big Labrador and my mom ended up putting baskets along the sofa so he wouldn't rub up against it and get it full of hair and body oil. Our dog and cats sleep on the bed but I wash that quilt A LOT! They also have their own beds.

It isn't just dogs. My sister has a problem with oil stains with her husband. He's completely bald, by choice, and when he reads in their nice wing chairs he leaves oil stains on the back where he rests his head.

You aren't being mean, hopefully the animals will adjust quickly to the new furniture and rules. Even with the old sofas your living room was beautiful, I continue to be so happy for you that you got these lovely new furnishings.

I'm a bit envious of your rain, it keeps threatening here and then passes us by which means I will have to water early in the morning before I catch a flight West tomorrow.

We all know the Wonder Dog is such a sweetie and I know he adores you so I'm sure he'll do his best.

Aren't dogs funny?

You're not mean and I think Webster knows that. The front of both of our sofas are where our big dog rubs her face as she walks by...I'm forever working at keep that area clean. Webster has great beds and will adjust eventually. Your living room is magazine worthy, so pretty.

Webster knows he is loved and he is such the 'good boy.' I expect he simply is adjusting to the changes and positioning himself so as to figure out "is this okay?" "Is that okay?" As long as you are near and giving him praise, Webster will thrive. My goodness, oatmeal for breakfast! So fine. Is he not the luckiest dog ever.
When you wake up, do you run out to immediately admire the new furniture? Celebrate.

ps Sure wish I could discover a product to resolve both human and doggie oil deposits which is both gentle and effective.

Karen -- I had to attend a real estate appraisal this morning at ten o'clock. I left the house at nine thirty and returned at ten fifty. I left Webster on the dog bed in front of the French door to the balcony and when I returned he was on the new dog bed below the front window. I didn't have a barricade in place either. I think he knows the drill already! He's such a good dog and I'm so proud of him.

I am laughing reading about Queen Vee's husband's oil stains from his head on his chair!

i don't think you're mean!
but i do think it will take time for him to understand the new rule. they get used to a routine.
and they don't have the advantage of understanding our language totally. pretty close though!
and i know you cover him up to protect his old bones from drafts. so he'll be fine!
i can't believe no one took those sofas though. i always thought they were lovely. even with doggy stains. oxy-clean might have worked. and i'm sure they were well made. oh well. their loss!
