I never really liked Dickens stories. They can be very grim. Saying that.... I just watched two films (on YouTube) about the history of Victorian workhouses in England. Talk about grim!!! I became curious because of watching Call The Midwife. One episode had a homeless woman who had spent 30 years in the workhouse. She had what one of the nuns called... 'The workhouse howl". A chilling sound full of pain and grief.
