Antique Farmhouse with Metal Roof

An historic dutch colonial house in Ghent, New York, has an antique standing seam metal roof in black. James Dixon Architect matched the roofing material on the addition they designed
I've always loved standing seam metal roofs. This addition is very seamless, isn't it? I was very interested in the architect's statement about metal roofs: "Because of its durability, metal roofs make a great 'green' choice. Shake roofs are lovely, but the material available today only lasts about ten years or so, compared to thirty-plus for metal." I know his statement about shake roofs is right because I have two friends with hand-cut cedar shake roofs that have been replaced or need to be replaced in fewer than 10 years. I find this quite shocking, especially since these wooden roofs are so expensive.
Here is the link for a great article on standing seam metal roofs. The house above is the third one down. If I ever have to replace my roof, I'll certainly consider a metal one.

Love the winding walkway to that sweet old place.

An aside....You always seem to find the best programs on television . Anything worth mentioning for today or tomorrow?

Hallelujah! Thank you, Rosemary. I KNEW you'd come through with something great.

Well, Rosemary, I've tried every conceivable channel I can think of and cannot find Legend of the Cloutie anywhere. This happens a lot and I'm beginning to think your east coast feeds are different.

But thank you anyway.

We went with metal for our roof. We love it---it's especially nice in the winter,-the snow just "slides" right off. Rainy days are rather pleasant as well-I love the sound of it!

Sue...Lucky you. I love the sound of rain on a metal roof...especially at night.

Rosemary, thanks for the heads up about Season 2 of Sherlock. Been trying to find it!
Love the metal roof! Here in Texas we see a few, but not many.

.. yes, the lovely sound of rain was my first thought ... I had a slate roof on my last house and loved the look and very long term durability ... in all the years I owned it, I only had to replace 2 tiles ...

always a good blog ... thanks

We are going to be replacing our roof next summer. We feel metal roofing would be the best choice because of its durability and the fact that snow tends to slide off of it which is a plus in a heavy snow year up here in northern Minnesota. However, the stumbling block is that my husband goes up on the roof every 4-6 weeks during the winter to clean chimneys on our wood burning stoves and metal roofing is notoriously slippery. Ugh. What to do, what to do?

Here is a link for you:

Scroll down and read this suggestion: "Our house has a steep (12-12 pitch) roof. On this house, and on our previous house, I made a ladder of treated 2x4s and 1x4s that is permanently on the roof, hooked over the ridge and running right next to the chimney and down to the eaves where I can get on it with a regular ladder from the ground. That way I can get to the chimney safely no matter what the weather or roof conditions. Makes it safe and easy to check the chimney in nicer weather too. I have heard that some Scandinavian countries require some kind of permanent access to chimneys if the home is heated with wood."
Good luck with your roof choice. Hope this helps.

Mama Pea...My pleasure. Maybe you can click on that commenter'a name and ask him to post some photos. I think Santa would give that chimney ladder two thumbs up, don't you?

Hello Rosemary,

I loved reading your post on metal roofing, and I also enjoyed reading the linked article! I thought I would also suggest a helpful resource to include with the article: http://www.metalroof.us/top-60-metal-roofing-facts-consumer-purchasing-guide-2013/ - it includes a list of 70 metal roofing facts dispelling some of the myths associated with metal roofing. - it is written by an experienced installer, and could be a great source of helpful information for your readers.

Thank you and keep up your good work!
