I discovered another alien among us while pruning the boxwood yesterday. He was very friendly and stayed around watching me work until I finished and went inside. He was huge, as long as my hand. Click photo to enlarge. my Nikon photo
I took this one with my iPhone.

I know how good they are and helpful. Sill.... that is one BIG bug! The few times I have 'met' one I was a little creeped out by the human way they move their head. haha
Yes! This happened to me this weekend too! I noticed one while out front re-seeding the lawn. It was as big as my hand also. What made me marvel the most, though, was how paper thin it was. It looked just like a half dried up leaf sitting on my doorstep!
Three cheers for the praying mantis. I'm not sure what they eat, but I know they do eat other bugs. I'm feeling pretty grumpy right now between yellow jacket stings, mosquito bites, and the white fly infestation that has ruined my kale and collards. I'm all for any help we can get with the pesky bugs of the world. Alas, I don't think a mantis is going to help with with any of these, but at least they don't go after humans.
I've never seen one before in my life and this week I've seen two--one in the garden and one on the pump at the gas station (that was odd!) Glad to see you still use your Nikon--I love the clarity of the picture.

I've always heard that they are a sign of a healthy garden. It seems a priveledge to see one for some reason. Good company!
