Great house

I am absolutely blurry eyed from looking at paint colors, solid stain colors, going from place to place to check availability, etc. The description of the color the people who built this house give is they used a very dark brown/black solid stain. I love the way it has weathered. WANT, but cannot find. Will not stop until I do. I am tempted by Dragon's Breath by Benjamin Moore. Must go and look tomorrow. Cool name! via

Paint is always the most challenging for me. I love the color of this house...are you thinking of using it on the cottage? I think it would be wonderful.

Benjamin Moore colors are great. Their name is mentioned very frequently in House Beautiful articles and layouts--you know that magazine is big on color. Used BM Burnt Peanut Red on a custom-built china cabinet, and rubbed on a faint antique charcoal finish for top coat. I love it!

LOVE a quest! I followed your link back to the source, then followed the thread of conversation including remarks from the architect [who originally specified the stain for that house]:
"The stain is a Cabot Solid body brown/black. We no longer have the Cabot samples for this project but it was a very dark (brown/black) stain color."

Well, I have the Cabot Solid stain samples brochure right here in my lap [we recently used a Cabot solid stain on our house], and I see several strong dark brown/black possibilities -- "Rocky Tundra" with green undertones, "Wooded Bog" with blue undertones, "Cordovan Brown" with red undertones.

Here, have a look: http://www.cabotstain.com/colors-and-finishes/families/Solids-Colors.html

Love the craftsman style door. The way it pops against the house, making the entrance quite prevalent.

It looks like Wooded Bog I think. I am afraid of Cabot Stains. That's what I have on my house now and there was a problem with the product the year my house was stained. One of my neighbors had the same problem. My house looks dreadful. I have to make sure I get the "right stuff" this time around, even if I have to wait until next spring. I am determined to do things right this time. Thanks for your help.

JudyMac....

I have Benjamin Moore paint through my interior. I love the color of your cabinet...burnt peanut red. I was going to visit my local paint store that specializes in this brand today or tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Ohhhh, hmmmmm, ahhhh! Interesting what you and your neighbor both experienced with Cabot, there HAS been some "bleed-through" on the Cabot-finished areas around our house, we thought it was OUR failure rather than theirs, but now I'm not so sure at ALL. I've never heard of anyone going wrong with Ben Moore, ever. Cannot wait to see your results!

I love Dragon's Breath and think it would make a great color for your house. It looks exactly like the color on the shingled home in the photo. Go for it!

I used the Cabot oil base semi-transparent cape cod gray stain on my white-cedar shingles and had trouble almost immediately. I live near the woods and now realize that oil base stains invite and feed mildew. From now on I will just use acrylic stains. This whole process is SO stressful.

Read all the complaints people have had over Cabot products here:

http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/cabot-stain-c1029.html

All the painters I've interviewed say they won't use it any more. It used to be good but too many people have had trouble since they changed their formula. I didn't mean to get you upset. Yours is probably fine.

Oh no, you haven't upset me Rosemary - you've added to my knowledge base, I'm grateful you'd share your experience. Our climate here in coastal North Florida is as punishing as yours there in NJ. This house takes a beating, and we've just lost some ancient surrounding oak trees so the sun is hitting us even harder now.
