Compawssion: Portraits Of Rescued Dogs

photos by Frank Bruynbroek

There are more photos here. Some were too painful for me to post. I'm so glad this Belgian born photographer took on this project called Compawssion, and published them in a coffee table book. Click on the previous link to read more about this amazing book. The website that has all of the photos in my post plus more is in Russian but here's a rough translation describing these rescued dog photos. "By not quite the usual black-and-white portraits, Belgian Frank Bryunbrok on for fifteen years, tells the heartbreaking stories around the world salvation. project entitled 'Compawssion' are more than hundreds of pictures of dogs, once in trouble. accidentally forgotten in the park with restless puppies burning eyes, cast once to the special dogs that are now barely fit in a rectangle frame, deadpan kind of complacent mutts, born by a crowd in the basement of a residential high-rises. They vied with each drop in the audience certainly in the area of the soul. However, this bitty 'tailed rabble' together one small, simple as a penny, the thing is - the human indifferent, through which the dogs finally found the 'Fire', his corner, his home." I used Google Translate. I'm so glad all of these dogs got the dignity due them via these heart-felt portraits. Warning: They are all beautiful but some might make you cry.

Thanks so much for the warning. I'm not up to it.

Nancy...

All of the portraits are very dignified but some of the faces can't help but show the hard life they have had. Especially the old dogs.

.. I love to see the pictures, but just can't handle the life they led before being rescued.

Our childhood dog was the most wonderful mix of Border Collie and Springer Spaniel. She was abandoned at our school in the middle of a bitter cold winter.

I coaxed her home, and my mother said we could take her in for the night. Cookie stayed for 14 years and was the center of our family.

Special .. these dogs are just so special. A wonderful post, thanks.

If only pet owners would be compassionate, kind and loving, and take care of their pets in a responsible manner, what a better world it would be.

You were special too and so was your mom. What a great personal story about a true pet rescue.

Now that you have relocated to Virginia do you get Ovation so you can watch the British version of The Antiques Roadshow? I hope you do.

I looked through these photographs with my own little rescue, found in a box outside Walmart, curled up against me. It is the eyes that tell their history. A beautiful reminder that all creatures deserve a loving touch. Bonnie

every dog who's ever owned me was a rescue. there is something about them. they know.
to be the one who returns their trust and their love for life is a bond like none other.
thank you rosemary.
i looked into the eyes of every one of them. the eyes said it all.
maybe by sharing this... people will somehow change the way they look at the noble 'dog.'
they are my greatest love. ALL of them. love, tammyj

Rosemary,
Both of our dogs are rescue, but we adopted them from a caring shelter in our city that doesn't put a time frame on the animal's stay with the shelter. Still, you always wonder what the experienced prior to their arrival and to our adopting them. They are both the sweetest pets. What a great endeavor this man has tackled.

Hi Rosemary ... I'm so sad to report that even a change in cable systems to Cox has not yielded Ovation ... I told them I was interested, as I know others who are ... and all we can do is keep calling and asking for it.

What a good memory you have ... overall I do like Cox better than Cablevision ... but still no Ovation ...

I love your blog ... xo
