Hollyhocks used to be planted by the outhouse because they were tall and could easily be seen from the house, and the Victorian ladies didn't have to disgrace themselves by asking where the outhouse was.
i am trying to imagine poor victorian ladies in those long voluminous skirts trying to get into a little outhouse. much less using it once in there! but i also found that history of the hollyhock fascinating! thanks JoAnn.

I love old-fashioned single hollyhocks. They are one of my earliest childhood memories. Thanks for sharing this picture.
