My Mother and A Giant Moth

I took this photo of my beautiful mother sitting on a giant tree trunk in Mendham NJ years ago. I added the giant moth from one of my antiquarian prints with photoshop. Sadly the tree isn't there now. I can't believe they cut it down just because the roots were interfering with the sidewalk as you can well imagine. There has to be another reason ... maybe it was struck by lightening or was diseased. It was one of my favorite things in that bucolic village standing proudly in front of a charming old church with a red door.

So sad to know that wonderful old tree is no longer.
I hate it when trees are cut down. And if this dear old one was removed only because of fear of litigation due to the possibility of people tripping and suing, well, that's an outrage.
If it had to be done, I do hope there was a better reason.

The graceful (and healthy) 100 year old apple tree on our last property was removed by the following owners... to put in a roofed patio. And a hideous design it was too :(
Very sad. I cried when I heard about it as I spent many hours underneath the old boy in all seasons, and he suited the old cottage so well.

Your mother looks so sweet and wistful - as though she is in a faery realm with that lovely giant moth by her side. And her red shoes would match the door of the old church :)

This is a lovely photo to cherish.

One day I hope to find out what happened to that old tree that was such a fine specimen from days gone by. I'm glad I captured it with my mom.

Laney...

It does hurt to think about the loss of such a beautiful old tree. One day I shall find out what happened to it.

Oh wow, your mom is so elegant and beautiful. I love her red shoes, not only do they look comfortable but they add just the perfect pop of color to her summer ensemble.

Surely that big old tree had an ailment, I can't imagine cutting it down otherwise. The circumference of the trunk must be several feet. Tis a shame.....I hope the church had a wake for it's demise.

I would give anything to age as well as your mom-what a neat lady. And that tree--WOW. It would be sad if it was because of the sidewalk--I would have MOVED the sidewalk first!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend. Big plans?
We're just enjoying home....

Well; it will depend on young people to defend our old trees all over the country! I started when I was seven! (my stepfather taught me about trees and the importance to preserve and maintain them! What a difference they make!

Penelope...

I know someone who had a shop near that tree and will ask her what happened. All of the towns around here have pretty strict tree commissions.

Sue...I'll pass on your kind words to my mom. She is still beautiful inside and out.

Victoria...Mother and I used to get new espadrilles in several colors every spring. We made her dress...with big patch pockets that buttoned on.

I miss your mother, too! And I just read about her; and saw her pictures here!

I miss my mother, too, every day! I am 66; and I lost her at 33! but I do talk to her every day!

That tree! Oh, there is a special place in hell for people who cut down trees such as this for the sidewalk to remain level (there are other solutions.....)

What a beautiful picture! I'm going to go get some espadrilles in your mother's memory!
