My 1922 Bronze Dog Medal

Below is a circa 1930 photo of Admiral Byrd receiving the "Bide-A-Wee" Medal in recognition of his humane treatment of animals.

Top photo is mine; bronze Bide-A-Wee medal circa 1922 from my personal collection. Read the history of Bide-A-Wee, founded in 1906 here.
Named for the Scottish expression “Stay a While,” the organization maintains facilities for rescue, adoption, training of pet owners in proper care of animals and even operates pet cemeteries.

And what is her Olympic specialty? Stealing cookies?

Have a great Labor Day!

What a beautiful way to honour such wonderful, noble, loyal, loving (I could go on) creatures.

We would be utterly bereft without them. They deserve a medal, and more, for what they do for us :)

Vicki...

The medal is to honor what we do for them. I will photograph the back of my medal soon.

Rosemary, thank you for sharing the link about this wonderful animal welfare organisation, I hadn't heard of them over here.

I am a big supporter of animal rescue shelters/organisations here and help out when I can, financially and personally, for they do an amazing job.

Unfortunately, there are so many animals that need to be rescued and re-homed (sadly, some that can't be) and it is good to know that there are people working damn hard to give animals a second/third chance through adoption to good homes and better lives.

For, the love from these animals, once they understand they are truly 'home', is immeasurable.

I know that although the financial rewards for these organisations aren't good (as they rely heavily on volunteers and donations), the emotional rewards are (mostly) very worth it.

Among other issues, we are fighting hard against puppy farms over here. The more people that are aware, the more we hope that they will stand and be a voice for the silent ones.
Awareness is a great weapon... to give people the power to choose wisely and (hopefully) stop buying from these inhumane sources.

i love the quote of david starr jordan left by humbird's comment. only i would say 'any' rather than perfect.
i wish we could become as diligent and caring for the slaughterhouse animals and the factory farms as we are our dogs and cats. they are enduring outright torture and terror on our behalf. the least we could do for them is not enough. i don't expect the country to become vegetarian... but we eat and waste and their lives remain unspeakable.
i've written the u.s.d.a. but no response. will take a lobby i expect. it's all about money.
i love the bide-a-wee metal! wonderful link... (as always!)
hugs and thank yous,
tammy j
