Downton Abbey on PBS

Aristocrats and servants face a changing world in the new PBS period drama Downton Abbey. This excellent Masterpiece Classic series (in four parts) follows an aristocratic British family and its servants in a drama set in the early 20th century.

I watched the premier episode last night and loved it so much I just wanted to crawl inside the TV. "Downton Abbey" is all that "Upstairs, Downstairs" was, and more. It is being repeated at various times all week long or you can watch Episode One on the PBS website. This series was a huge hit in the UK, that's why the DVD is already available.

Did you see it and like it as much as I did? Please watch this series.

I thought it was great. What a winter treat. I read there will be a second season.

Great movie, and a wonderful way to spend a cold winter evening.

Absolutely loved it, I especially love it when the sets are so beautiful. I watched an old 2000 movie the other day which was supposed to have taken place in an English manor, and whoever did set decoration had an abysmal knowledge of what they look like. It was so horrid. Check it out when you get time just to see an aging but graceful Julie Andrews, the movie is "Relative Values" when you see the sets, you will know what I mean, you can almost see the plywood. It is on Netflix instant view.

I'm very disappointed that PBS chose to edit it (dumb down for America) from 8 hours to 6. I felt like all evening I was missing parts to the story that would have made it clearer and more interesting. It cost a million pounds to make each hour of Downton Abbey; those Brits do costume drama so incredibly well. I'm hoping at some point to be able to view the complete 8 hour series.

Rosemary, thank you for your kind comment on Little Camera. Today is Christopher's birthday and he's getting a new iPhone so I'm expecting more great pics to be posted.

Once again the huge snow storm that is causing havoc south and soon to be north is pretty much going to bypass us. I can see that you and Webster will be keeping each other warm, there is nothing better than a special blankie to sooth and comfort one.

Normally, I'm doing good to keep my head up after 9 p.m., bored as I am with most TV viewing, But not this one. I wanted it to go on and on. Exquisite set design and costumes, perfect casting, fine details like the jet black jewelry and lace. Can't wait for the next episode.

Yes, I was there, too, watching Downtown Abbey with you. And, I can see from the comments that we were in the best of company.
Now, I must follow Webster's lead and turn-in. My, he makes sleep look delicious. Good night. Sleep well.

Sadly I didn't watch tv last night as I was helping a friend move but I love British drama so I will definitely look for it this week! Thanks for the "head's up" Rosemary!

I recorded it. Now I can't wait to watch it. Perhaps this afternoon when the snow starts to fall -- with a nice cup of godiva hot cocoa!

I watched it religiously each Sunday on ITV (in the UK). Even my fiance watched it which only highlights the quality of the story lines and their appeal to a wider audience. I can't wait for the second season.

A new "Upstairs Downstairs" has been showing on BBC1. I must say it isn't as wonderful as Downton Abbey.
