Givenchy Postage Stamp | France
This image makes me want to write a letter.
Two women represent the typical Givenchy style of the 50s and 60s: Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. By furnishing Hollywood movie stars beginning in 1953, Givenchy achieved a popularity like never before. A rather sad event brought global attention to Givenchy dresses. When John F.Kennedy was assassinated, the world witnessed a mourning Kennedy family all dressed in Givenchy clothes. Jackie Kennedy ordered a Givenchy dress for the funeral, which was especially flown in from Paris. It is said, that at that time, the Givenchy atelier possessed individual patterns sheets for every female member of the Kennedy family. In 1955, he introduced separates and then the Orlon-fabric to the haute couture. His designs are elegant and refined. via google imagesFriday, May 14, 2010
Actress Katharine Hepburn Honored on Postage Stamp
"Katharine Hepburn, star of such classic movies as 'African Queen' and 'Little Women,' took her place on a U.S. postage stamp this past Wednesday.
The 44-cent stamp was dedicated in ceremonies in Old Saybrook, Conn., and is on sale nationwide.
The red-haired actress becomes the 16th star to be honored on the U.S. Postal Service's Legends of Hollywood stamp series.
During her long career Hepburn won four Academy Awards, the first for her performance in 'Morning Glory' in 1933.
Her other Oscar performances were in 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,' 1967; 'The Lion in Winter,' 1968, and 'On Golden Pond,' 1981." USPS.com

Royal Mail Goes To The Dogs (And Cats)
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s stamp of approval
A temporary truce was called yesterday when Royal Mail carriers helped celebrate the 150th anniversary of the world-famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. "Since 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has worked tirelessly to care for and re-home over three million dogs and cats, and the stamps are an excellent way to celebrate 150 years of dedicated care." The charity began life as the 'Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs' in Holloway, north London in 1860. Eleven years later it moved to Battersea and in 1883 it started taking in cats.
All of the lucky models are ex-residents that have been successfully placed in loving homes. Once abandoned, they are now First Class pets. The photographs were taken over several days in London and Windsor by renowned animal photographer Steve Hoskins. Such a happy story. My dog Webster was adopted from an animal shelter. I wonder if the USPS would be interested in having him pose for a stamp?

I've always loved this quote by William Shakespeare.

12 Rules to Live By - Robert Louis Stevenson
- Make up your mind to be happy. Learn to find pleasure in simple things.
- Make the best of circumstances. No one has everything and everyone has something of sorrow.
- Don't take yourself too seriously.
- Don't let criticism worry you. You can't please everybody.
- Don't let your neighbors set your standards; be yourself.
- Do things you enjoy doing but stay out of debt.
- Don't borrow trouble. Imaginary things are harder to bear than actual ones.
- Since hate poisons the soul, do not cherish enmities and grudges. Avoid people who make you unhappy.
- Have many interests. If you can't travel, read about places.
- Don't hold post-mortems or spend time brooding over sorrows and mistakes.
- Do what you can for those less fortunate than yourself.
- Keep busy at something. A very busy person never has time to be unhappy.
Good Rules For All ~ A great piece of needlework.

George Washington's Birthday
George Washington's Birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday in February. Before 1971, Washington's Birthday was one of nine federal holidays celebrated on specific dates, which—year after year—fell on different days of the week (the exception being Labor Day—the original Monday holiday).
George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar, which placed Washington's birth on February 22, 1732.I don't think too many people are remembering George Washington today. This holiday has become a day to shop. The banks and post offices are closed but all the stores are having sales. This year we have two major shopping days in a row...Valentine's Day and President's Day. Happy shopping. Sorry George.

Rare Million Dollar George Washington Stamp
George Washington Miniature Portrait
I think Abraham Lincoln's birthday has been lumped into Presidents' Day but I couldn't find a single reference to corroborate this fact. This one comes close. Am I correct?

I never tire of reading about the inspirational Audrey Hepburn, do you? "Others matter more than you do, so don't fuss, dear, get on with it." Now what could be more to the point and funny too? She was beautiful inside and out. Love her, Rosemary.

Albert Einstein Favored The Simple Life
As I continue to clean and purge, organize and rethink, recycle and donate, downsize and resisist the urge to buy more, I am so very inspired by the clear thinking of Albert Einstein. ~Rosemary
