Antique Mosaic Design ~ Tilework from Pompeii . . .

I can't tell you how much I love this graphic design. It's a mosaic floor sample from sketches made by the author in Pompeii.

Scanned from OWEN JONES, THE GRAMMAR OF ORNAMENT, 1865.

Hi Rosemary,

Now you've hit on something I absolutely love - mosaics - and this one is very lovely! A few summers back, on a trip to Southern California, I got the chance to go to the Getty Villa in Malibu. There I strolled through a reproduction of a beautiful villa that once stood in Herculaneum and was destroyed by the same volcano that overtook Pompeii. I was in absolute heaven surrounded by all those mosaic floors, marble staircases and countless antiquities. I'll never forget it!!
