Randolph Caldecott Illustrations are So Charming

This was photographed from one of my antiquarian picture books by R. Caldecott (1846-1886). It is a scene from 'A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go' that couldn't be more charming. Mr. Rat and Froggy are on their best behavior while being entertained at Mousey's Hall by Miss Mousey herself.

So sweet. I love old children's book illustrations. They are really quite beautiful and often overlooked.

I always wondered where the Caldecott honour came from. We just got an old copy of Alison Uttley's "Little Grey Rabbit's Storybook"...illustrations by Margaret Tempest. I always find animals in clothing, in sweet little cottages with dishes and fireplaces and sideboards to be the most charming of children's art...like Arnold Lobel's "Frog and Toad" series. So wonderful!

I am fond of Caldecott's art as well.

I love this illustration...Beatrix Potter like. And like Knitty Gritty Homestead, I loved the Frog and Toad series.
