My Green Zinnias

My first chartreuse zinnia called ENVY opened up this morning on an overcast day. Of all the flowers on my hot balcony, which gets direct sun for much of the day, these plants are doing best of all in a big round clay pot that is somewhat shallow. They are heat-loving annuals that grow straight and tall. I posted this photo on Instagram this morning and people are loving it.

Here's a photo of the seed packet. Next year I want to plant them earlier than I did this year and might even start them indoors and transplant them when the weather is warm. The note on the back of the seed packet says "Transplant outdoors after last frost. Zinnias do not benefit from being planted early; wait for warmer weather". I sowed my seeds way too late but better late than never, right?

I edited my photo a little more to get rid of the green reflections on the lower portion. I use the iPhone edits and then go to my Snapseed App (free download for iPhone and Android) for final perfection 😎

Connie -- The green zinnia is new to me too. Next year I want to plant some colored ones too. The very tall ones.

I absolutely love and appreciate zinnias. There's an area near my garden shed that has poor soil. I've tried to enrich it, but it seems to revert to clay. A few years ago, I started planting zinnias there, and they didn't mind that lousy soil at all! I had been planting the large variety, but whenever a storm rolled in, I'd find them lying on their side. This year, I planted smaller ones, and their colors are magnificent. If I weren't getting older and telling myself to cut back, I'd plant lots more zinnias! Really like your gorgeous chartreuse!

I love green (and blue) flowers. This is amazing. Great job. I'm impressed you grew it from seed. Here in So. CA we buy plants in small 6 pack sized packs or 4". They are already underway.

Rosemary....this photo is simply gorgeous and amazing. WOW! I saw it on IG while on my way to a lunch date, didn't have time to comment but will. I have never seen this variety of zinnia, it is stunning. I started my Zinnias too late too, finally a few are finally starting to bloom. I think that they will continue to do so through September. Good thing they love heat/sun because that's all we've had this summer. Like you, I think next year I will start inside and transplant. I will be saving seeds from this years flowering and use them for next year but I think I must purchase a packet of Envy Zinnia seeds also. Love the name, so appropriate.

My husband used to grow Zinnias and Envy was probably his favorite. I always had little vases sitting around with a few of them he picked for me. Sunflowers were his other favorites. He used to plant every variety he could find. I miss him and his flowers.

According to seed envelope, Envy grows to 2-3 feet tall. That’s huge. Don’t think i’ve ever seen zinnias that tall. This one surely is a standout!

JudyMac -- Judy --There is a farmhouse in a nearby town that always has multi-colored zinnias that grow taller than their mailbox post. I think they are State Fair zinnias that grow up to 4 feet tall. They are really stunning. My mailbox doesn't get enough sun or I would plant some on the road. Next year I will plant some colored ones too. The Envy seeds I planted in a pot are doing better than the ones I planted in the ground. No critters and I tend to baby the plants on my balcony.
