Sunday's Child ~ Happy Birthday to Me . . .

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

Sunday's child or Sabbath Day Child ~ that would be me!
The words of Sunday's child poem were used to teach children the correct order and the names of the days of week. Sunday was traditionally referred to as the 'Sabbath day' in the Christian religion, hence there is no actual reference to the words Sunday's child! Our childhood memories of this particular poem are vague, we can remember that there is a poem about the attributes of being born on different days of the week but we cannot recall the actual definitions. Everyone, of course, would have preferred to be a Sunday's child for Sunday's child is bonny and blithe and good and gay.
Check here to find out your birth day-of-the-week.
Thanks for stopping by the cottage today to help me celebrate my birthday. ♥Rosemary

Photos from the cottage . . .

I picked this Virginia Creeper leaf cluster while walking Webster yesterdayafternoon in the rain. It is also known as Parthenocissus quinquefolia.

I wish I could spend the whole day today here. Not my house. Great space!

I think I'll bring my rosemary plant in soon. It has never looked better.

I love the back of this large leaf from the rear of my property.

My Alberta Spruce is doing very well in this great cement pot I got at a tag sale.

My chestnuts are falling. Can the pine cones be far behind?

Brrr. I remember this night last winter. Nothing stops Webster and me from taking our nightly walk.

I was just playing around in the living room and captured the detail of a finial on an early ladder back armchair.

Thanks for stopping by the cottage to look at a few photos. Have a great weekend. ♥Rosemary

Amazing Botanical Illustrations by Ernst Haekel . . .

I find these scientific drawings from the 19th century to be so very beautiful!

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (1834-1919) was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of botanicals, animals, and sea creatures some of which are shown above. Read more.

Another wonderful + inspiring quote by Audrey Hepburn.

Isn't this the best staircase?
I love the risers painted to look like books!

I think the ceiling works very well in this room.

Thanks for stopping by the cottage for my daily blog post. Things are in full swing at my house and at the real estate office. Busy times are here again. ♥Rosemary

Life's Little Instruction Book, page 130 . . .

Everything looks different to me today as I gaze out my window. Summer really is over! I think I will go and sharpen some brand new pencils in preparation for getting back to business.

$500 U.S. Bill . . .

I don't think I've ever seen one of these $500 bills in person, have you? What a nice way to learn your presidents! Now I will know to say yes if anyone ever offers me a McKinley. Here's hoping everyone has a priceless long weekend. Best regards from the cottage. ♥Rosemary

Thoughts from the cottage . . .

The fall cleanup continues. This is a photo of the night sky that I snapped last night from my second floor deck when I came in from moonlight weeding. It was so beautiful.

I love this photo of the wellies in an old greenouse. I wear mine daily on morning walks with Webster the wonder dog. I don't pick up my grass clippings and wearing the big boots keeps me from tracking them inside the house.

Thanks for stopping by the cottage. Enjoy the long Labor Day weekend. Hope you have taken Friday off so you'll have 4 whole days before the "real world" begins next week. ♥Rosemary

First Edition of THE GREAT GATSBY Sells for $180,000 . . .

This is something for you to look for at each and every garage sale, tag sale, estate sale, and book sale from now on. It looks very ordinary so you will have to look carefully. This is what all the booksellers refer to as a Modern First.

Francis Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925
Original dark green cloth stamped in blind and gilt, with dust jacket.
Considered by experts as quite possibly "the most expensive piece of Twentieth Century printed paper in book collecting." The dust jacket is an exceptionally rare find, which clearly contributed to the book far surpassing its estimate of $80/120,000 and ultimately fetching $180,000 — a world record price for any Gatsby. Read about other big ticket items that sold at Bonham's Auction.

I am right on schedule with my outside work trying to get a jump on fall. I was cutting down my giant weeds by moonlight last night. Really! I didn't come inside until 8:15. I hope the moon casts a giant hex on them for next year.
The weather is absolutely fabulous and there is no rain predicted for the next week. Cool and crisp with no humidity. Perfect for doing hard work outside. I am feeling very fulfilled about being so independent and doing everything myself since everybody else I know uses an outside service.

Painted Floor Cloth with Mariner's Compass . . .

Who doesn't love a painted floor?

This is the kitchen in my previous house. I painted the floor myself with gray and white diamonds. It wasn't hard at all and it held up very nicely.

Here is a scan of a page I ripped out of a magazine. I love the mariner's compass design on this painted floor cloth. At first I thought it was a painted floor but on closer examination I noticed several "wrinkles" so I decided it was a design on canvas. I have a hallway that is unusually narrow with a painted floor in a solid color.

One of these days I hope to decorate it. I might skip the diamonds and just put the mariner's compass in the center. The hardest part would be plotting out the design.

I am not at all ready to tackle such a project. I just wanted you to know what was on my mind today. Thanks for stopping by the cottage. ♥Rosemary
