Swan Mom and Cygnets

Swan Family Outing

When swans are born they're called cygnets, which is pronounced sig-net. Cygnets keep their name until they're a year old at which time they have two options for names. An adult male swan is called a cob and an adult female swan is called a pen.

OMG, this is just too adorable for words! Swans may just be the most beautiful animals in the world. I know saying that is a bit of a stretch, and many may disagree with me, as there are so many beautiful creatures. I've always had this fantasy of having a pond, or lake, with swans. I once went to a lecture at the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show given by the interior designer, Timothy Corrigan. He has a chateau in France with swans. I asked him if he was ever concerned that his swans might just fly away and live at another chateau. He laughed and said, "No, swans don't really fly". I'm no swan expert, but I'm not really sure about that.

Lisa D. -- Maybe he has mute swans. Not all swans migrate. Here is a link with all you need to know:

I hope you get your swan pond one day or even a swan lake.

What a great photo! Those little ones are so doggone cute! I learned something new, too. I didn't know what mom and dad swans were called. (Now if I can just remember, lol.)

Pam -- I learned something too. The names of adult swans will be hard to remember and nobody will know what you are talking about when you say, "Isn't that cob handsome? His pen is pretty too."
